Two left homeless after fire near Dewart
DEWART – Two people were left homeless late Sunday night when an accidental fire broke out in an addition to a home on Graces Way, about two miles north of here, Warrior Run Area Fire Chief Doug Funk said.
The blaze at 181 Graces Way, the home of Tim Johns Sr., broke out about 11:45 p.m. Both Johns and a friend staying at the house smelled smoke and safely escaped the one-story house, Funk said.
“There was heavy smoke coming from the attic crawl space, and flames were shooting through the roof so I called for second-alarm tankers,” he added.
However, after making “a very aggressive interior attack,” firefighters stopped the fire from spreading “to the main part of the house,” and several pieces of fire equipment could return to their communities in a short period of Funk said.
The 20×50-foot addition was a total loss, and the main part of the house sustained smoke and water damage, he said. Damage was estimated at $75,000, and the cause of the fire was “an overheated chimney,” Funk added.
One firefighter had a fall and was treated at Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg, for a knee injury, he said.
Johns, who did not have fire insurance on the addition, was staying with relatives while the friend was getting assistance from the American Red Cross, Funk said.
In addition to Warrior Run Area, firefighters from Milton, White Deer Township, Lewisburg, Montgomery, Clinton Township, Washington Township and Muncy responded to the scene.
This was the second-two alarm fire in Northumberland County’s Delaware Township in six days. Fire destroyed a vacant home at 14740 Route 405, just a mile away from Sunday night’s fire, on Jan. 7. The cause of that blaze was undetermined, according to a state police fire marshal.
