Local roundup: Lycoming baseball falls in close game to Scranton 4-3

Senior Danny DeLucas had four hits and a RBI to lead the Lycoming College baseball team, which outhit the University of Scranton, but fell 4-3, in Landmark Conference action at Brandon Park.

Junior Nick Hoheb finished 2 for 3 with a run and junior A.J. Llorente, a Montoursville graduate, added a ground-rule double.

Scranton (12-11 overall, 8-5 Landmark) rallied with three runs in the fourth to get on the scoreboard first, using three singles, a walk and a hit batter. In the fifth, a ground-rule double and a two-out infield hit gave the Royals a 4-0 lead.

Lycoming (15-14 overall, 7-7 Landmark) got on the scoreboard in the seventh, as Llorente’s ground-rule double over the 390-foot sign in center field started the inning. He moved to third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch. Hoheb singled with one out, moved to third on a single by senior Evan Mok and scored on a two-out single from DeLucas.

Lock Haven fell on the road at Slippery Rock 4-3 and 8-6 in a PSAC Western Division doubleheader. Lock Haven moves to 12-23 overall and 2-13 in the PSAC West. Slippery Rock improves to 22-11 on the season and 11-5 in the conference.

In game one, Slippery Rock jumped out to an early 4-0 lead with a big inning in the bottom of the first. Lock Haven, however, scored three runs over the ensuing four innings to cut its deficit to 4-3.

Jake Ambrosio singled in a run in the second, Morgen Billotte scored on a wild pitch in the third and Bryce Vincent doubled in a run in the fourth to keep the Bald Eagles alive.

The Bald Eagles moved the tying run to scoring position in both the sixth and seventh inning, but The Rock got out of both jams without surrendering a run to hold on for a 4-3 victory.

Mansfield split a doubleheader against ninth-ranked Millersville, winning the first game (9-3) before dropping the second (5-3).

In the first game, Jacob Houtz got the Mountaineers quickly in the top of the first inning with a two-run home run over the centerfield fence to make it 2-0.

Austin Beauchamp started for the Mounties and got himself out of an early jam in the bottom of the first with a strikeout that left the bases loaded for Millersville.

Hunter Smith joined the homer party in the third with a grand slam to put the Mounties up 6-0. The homer marked his fifth of the season and his 26th RBI.

Beauchamp, who threw 3 1/3 innings and allowed just one run, was relieved in the bottom of the fourth by Austin Lewis. Lewis went on to get the win, pitching the final 3.2 innings, allowing two runs on three hits and striking out four.

• Senior Katie Maguire led the Warriors with 10 goals, the second most in a game in program history, and junior Riley Block followed up with six to lead the Lycoming College women’s lacrosse team as it fell, 22-17, against Drew.

In the first period, Maguire started the Warriors’ scoring in the fifth minute, tying the game at one, and she added more goals in the ninth and 13th minutes. Block scored her first goal of the game in the seventh minute, as the Warriors (7-6 overall, 2-4 Landmark) ended the quarter trailing by two, 6-4.

Block returned in the 20th second of the second quarter to add another goal. Maguire followed with her fourth goal a minute later off a free-position shot. Drew (4-9 overall, 2-4 Landmark) entered halftime with a four-point advantage, 10-6.

Lock Haven had 10 different players score and the Bald Eagles registered their season-high in goals en route to a dominant 20-5 victory over visiting Edinboro in a PSAC contest.

Lock Haven has now won three of its last four games to improve to 7-5 overall and 4-2 in the PSAC West. With the victory, The Haven takes a two-game lead for third place in the Western Division. Edinboro falls to 2-10 on the season and 0-6 in the conference.

Lock Haven scored nine goals in the opening 15 minutes and never looked back as they led from start to finish. Of the 10 players who scored, six found the back of the net multiple times, including a game-high five goals from Gabby Gunnip.

Lexi Blunk recorded a hat-trick, while Hadley Munn, Kaitlyn Collins, Makayla Kelly and Peyton Masters all scored twice.

• Seniors Joey Hoover and Shayne Wilson each led the Warriors with three goals as the Lycoming College men’s lacrosse team fell, 20-8, against Drew.

Hoover kicked off the Warriors’ first-period scoring in the 10th minute, bringing the score to 3-1. Wilson followed with two goals, which came in the 11th and 14th minute, respectively, tying the game at 3.

Drew widened its lead to nine points in the second quarter, 12-3, but the Warriors (5-7 overall, 1-5 Landmark) rallied in the third quarter. Wilson returned in the second minute of the third quarter to sweep a goal into the cage. Senior Ryan Farrell darted down the field in the eighth minute to add another. Seconds later, Hoover followed with two goals, bringing the score to 12-7. First-year Ryder Gehris rounded out Lycoming’s scoring in the last minute of the third quarter.

Penn College handled Elmira College, 28-1,in a non-conference game. The Wildcats improved to 10-4, while the Soaring Eagles fell to 0-4.

Penn College led 11-0 after the first and 22-1 at the break. The Wildcats outscored Elmira 6-0 in the second half.

Elliot Dotson finished eight points, on four goals and four assists, while Roman DeCenzo netted a game-high six goals. Jake Small finished with three goals, while Jesse Welch and Owen Kupsey finished with two goals each. Small added four assists, while John Dolezal and Will Ehret finished with three helpers.

• Senior Sarah Lanphear and freshman Sadie Stahl, a South Williamsport graduate, each won their singles matches against Elizabethtown College to lead the Lycoming College women’s tennis team on Senior Day as the team fell, 5-2, in Landmark Conference action at the Central PA Tennis Complex.

Stahl secured a point in No. 3 singles against Adriana Burmeister. Stahl fell 7-6 (11) in the first set, rallied in the second set to a 6-4 win, and claimed a 7-6 (5) victory in the third set to break the tie.

Lanphear also won her No. 4 singles match, 6-2, 6-1, against Elizabethtown’s Katie Balzano to add a point for Lycoming.

In No. 1 doubles, senior Rei Saar, a Montoursville gradaute, and junior Emma Kelchner claimed a 6-3 victory over Elizabethtown’s Haley Bishop and Gabriella Palladini. Saar also had a close No. 1 singles match against Bishop, winning the first set, 6-3. Bishop followed up with a 7-6 (2) win in the second and a 6-4 win in the third set.

• Junior Luke Taylor, a Williamsport native, led the Lycoming College men’s tennis team with a singles win in a 6-1 setback in Landmark Conference action against Elizabethtown College.

Taylor brought in a point for the Warriors, winning his No. 6 singles match against Zachary Hinkel (6-2, 6-0). Taylor and senior Mohamed Ebeid also rallied in No. 3 doubles against Elizabethtown’s Sam Langer and Kyler Henne, claiming a 6-4 win.

First-years Kayvan Shams, a South Williamsport graduate, and Logan Hammond, a Loyalsock graduate, also teamed in No. 2 doubles, falling in a tight 6-4 match, against Ryan Kraychik and Austin Kohler.

• The Lock Haven golf team returned to action and competed in the Millersville Invitational hosted at the Tanglewood Manor Golf Club. Lock Haven finished with a team score of 411 to place eighth.

Kendall Fedder and Macy Trostle led the group with individual scores of 96 to finish tied for 36th overall. Skylar Pentz rounded out the top-3 for The Haven with a score of 108.

Sydney Hamilton (111) and Bree Johnson (117) also competed in Lock Haven’s group of five.
