Saturday’s victory over No. 16 Kutztown was the second nationally-ranked upset of the week for Lock Haven, who took down No. 10 East Stroudsburg 11-5 on Wednesday.
• The Penn College men’s lacrosse team used a 12-goal first period en route to a 26-2 United East victory at Cairn. The win upped the team’s UE record to 2-1 and its overall record to 12-4 — the 12-win season is a program best — and clinched a berth in the UE playoffs. Cairn dropped to 0-4 in the conference and 0-11 overall.
After the 12-goal first frame, the Wildcats added four goals in the second period, seven in the third, and three in the fourth while limiting Cairn to two goals in the final period.
Aidan McFalls started the scoring at the 14:37 mark in the opening period, and after a three-goal Penn College burst within 14 seconds from 11:44 to 11:30, the rout was on.
Owen Kupsey led the offense with five goals, Elliot Dotson recorded a hat trick and added four assists, and AJ Dotson had three goals and one assist as the Wildcats had 54 shots on goal while limiting Cairn to five. Antonio Santora was 9 of 9 in faceoffs and had 10 ground balls, Levi Borkowski was 8 of 8 in faceoffs, and Brody Borkowski was 10 of 12 in faceoffs. No. 4 Army West Point scored 14 of its 20 goals in the middle two periods and went on to defeat Bucknell, 20-11. The Bison put 11 goals on the board against the nation’s top-ranked defense – one shy of the most allowed by the Black Knights this season – but Army was red-hot at the other end, scoring 20 goals on 44 shots.
Michael Meyer scored three times and Connor Davis and Peter Grandolfo twice each for the Bison, who fell to 5-8 overall and 2-5 in the Patriot League. Anthony Panetti logged a goal and two assists, and Sean Berrigan added two assists of his own.
Army came into the day allowing only 6.55 goals per game. The Bison had seven by halftime, but the first-place Black Knights broke open a tight game in the third quarter and improved to 11-1 on the season, 6-1 in the Patriot League.
Jackson Eicher, who came in ranked second nationally in goals per game, added seven more to his sheet along with three assists. Gunnar Fellows also had a big day with five goals and two assists. Army won 23 of the 34 faceoffs and found success scoring in transition, including three goals from long poles.
• For the first time since the Patriot League adopted a team-formatted men’s tennis championship in 1994, Bucknell has earned a berth in the tournament final.
The second-seeded Bison got out to a strong start in Saturday’s semifinal match against No. 3 Lehigh, waited out a weather delay of more than two hours, and then finished off the Mountain Hawks 4-0 to set up a rematch with top-seeded Navy in the final on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Varsity Tennis Courts.
This was the 18th time that the Bison had reached the Patriot League semifinals, but despite some close calls in recent years, they had never been able to get over the hump. Now Bucknell will have a chance to play for their first Patriot League title since 1991, when it was an individually flighted format.
Much like Friday’s quarterfinal against Lafayette, Bucknell gutted out some tough doubles matches to take the early point. Adam Stavrakas and Oscar Bain Moreno de Vega won 6-4 at No. 2, and with third doubles all knotted at 5-5, the top pairing of Amar Tahirovic and Brendan McDonald picked up a key break at 5-all and then served it out at love to beat Marc Blekhman and Sean Jaeger 7-5.
Bucknell had won three opening sets in singles and led in three others when a brief thunderstorm halted play. A few minutes of heavy rain soaked the courts, and the action resumed after a delay of two hours and 12 minutes.
• The Lock Haven golf team competed in the East Stroudsburg Invitational in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania at the Glen Brook Golf Club. Skylar Smith broke the program-record for lowest individual round by shooting an 84.
As a team, the Bald Eagles finished with a season-best score of 376 after a fantastic round by the group, which featured personal bests and the program-record by Smith.
Smith previously held the record in 2021-22, before having it broken in 2023-24. After her score of 84 (over-12) on Saturday, she stands on top of The Haven leader board once again.
