Local roundup: Montoursville tennis sweeps Williamsport 5-0
Montoursville swept the competition against Williamsport in boys tennis on Monday afternoon, 5-0.
At No. 1 singles, Montoursville’s Teli Bobotas picked up a 6-4, 6-1 win vs. Joseph Hillman. Rain Snyder won against Spencer Kaar at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-2 and at No. 3 singles it was Cullen Pauling earning a 6-1, 6-0 victory.
Montoursville’s Gio Catino and Cole Snyder earned a 6-2, 6-2 win vs. Guilhem Colin and Charles Plummer at No. 1 doubles and at No. 2 doubles, Mason Morrow and Colby Ulmer earned a three-set 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 win against Owen Trump and Wyatt Judge.
Jersey Shore secured a 5-0 win against Milton. At No. 1 singles, Ryder Fink earned a straight-set 6-0, 6-0 win over Hagen Hanselman. Saul Hensler won for the Bulldogs at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-3 and Abram Paulhamus won by forfeit at No. 3 singles.
South Williamsport edged Hughesville, 3-2. South Williamsport swept the doubles competition with wins by Lucas Bower and Dylan Webb (No. 1) and David Miller and Levi Jackson (No. 2).
Josh Myers of Hughesville won at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-0.
Central Mountain lost to Shikellamy, 4-1. The Wildcats’ lone win came at No. 1 doubles where Brayden Spedding and Mitchell Borges earned a 6-4, 6-3 win over Andrew Zelnick.
Loyalsock blanked Bloomsburg, 5-0, as Ian Bower posted a 6-0, 6-0, straight-set win at No. 3 singles for the Lancers against Ryan Smith.
Colby Peters won 6-0, 6-2 for Loyalsock against Marc-Alexi Dobbins at No. 1 singles and at No. 2 singles, Evan Anderson defeated Colton Roberts, 6-1, 6-1.
• South Williamsport softball opened its season in impressive fashion, thumping 6A Westerville, Ohio, 11-1 in five innings in its first game at the Myrtle Beach Tournament. Kendall Cardone highlighted a seven-run first inning, smashing a three-run triple on her way to finishing 2 for 3 with four RBIs.
Alizabeth Schuler threw a masterful two-hitter, the two hits being bunts. She let just one ball leave the infield and threw 39 of 56 pitches for strikes. Maddie Pinkerton went 2 for 3 with a run and Mikaiya Hills was 1 for 2 with two runs.
Sage Lorson, Abby Lorson and Emily Holtzapple all added RBIs.
Central Mountain edged out DuBois in a close contest, 4-3. Central Mountain started out strong by scoring two runs in the first inning. The game was tied 3-3 going into the eighth inning.
It was Cora Myers who came up clutch for the Wildcats by hitting a fly to score the game-winning run in Central Mountain’s season opener.
Jayla Koser went 3 for 4 with three RBIs, helping Hughesville defeat two-time defending District 4 Class A champion Bucktail, 9-3. Hughesville (1-1) built a 5-0 fourth inning lead and added four runs in the seventh. Ella Breneisen struck out six in 5 1/3 innings, while Addison Henninger and Kiana Peck both went 1 for 2 with RBIs. Eva Sockman hit a two-run home run for Bucktail (0-1), while Angel Kmetz went 2 for 2.
Warrior Run opened its season in strong fashion, cranking out 14 hits and defeating Bloomsburg, 16-6 in six innings. Ella Printzenhoff had a strong day, going 4 for 5 with a double and four RBIs. Millie Gelnett was 3 for 4 with a double and three RBIs, while McKenna Forman went 2 for 3 with a double and three runs. Lakesha Hauck also doubled and Cait Waltman and Mackenzie Heyler both drove in two runs.
• Briar Persing struck out all six batters he faced, throwing 20 of 22 pitches for strikes, while going 2 for 3 with two RBIs as Montgomery opened its season with a 15-0, four inning win against Sugar Valley. Parker Bennett struck out four in two innings and was 2 for 3 with a double, RBI and three runs. Parker Persing also had two hits and two runs, scoring three times, while Lincoln Miller and Victor Ottman both had hits in the season opening win.
Landon Welshans went 3 for 4 with a double, two RBIs, two runs and four steals, helping Jersey Shore defeat CMVT, 10-6. The Bulldogs (2-0) have scored 24 runs in their first two games and had 10 hits against CMVT. Zach Myers and Mazden Lupton both produced two hits with Myers hitting an RBI double. Collin Berguson belted a triple and Greyson Confair earned his first varsity win, striking out seven in four innings.
• Sophomore Will Eberz shot an 82 for the third straight day to finish in a tie for 24th to lead the Lycoming College golf team at the Lebanon Valley College Spring Invitational. Eberz notched eight pars and birdied the par-5, 523-yard No. 15. He carded a 3-over-par 39 on the back nine to help him finish tied for 24th in the 67-player field.
The Warriors finished 13th in the field with a 385, as sophomore Connor Shanahan finished tied for 51st with a 91. Sophomore Ross Eyer, a Muncy graduate, added a 103, junior Kyle Davis, a North Penn-Liberty graduate, had a 109 and senior Branson Dodson had a 114.
• Penn College swept its third consecutive non-conference softball series after defeating Penn State Altoona. The Wildcats clawed out a 4-3 victory in 10 innings during game one while earning a 7-2 win in game two.
In game one, Penn College struck early with a run in the top of the first inning when Lexi Snyder hit an RBI single to score Jersey Shore graduate Grace Lorson. Altoona responded with two runs in the third inning before the Wildcats knotted the game at two when Fayth Anderson crossed the plate in the fourth inning.
