Local roundup: Hughesville baseball wins season opener with 17-2 rout over Wellsboro
Hughesville erupted for 15 runs in its final two at-bats, turning a tie game into a rout as it opened its season with a 17-2 win at Wellsboro. The game was tied 2-2 after five innings before the Spartans scored seven runs in the sixth inning and eight more in the seventh while finishing with 15 hits. JD Lunger went 3 for 6 with a home run and five RBIs and catcher Kyler Solomon was 3 for 4 with two RBIs in his first varsity start.
Jed Abernatha tripled and doubled and Brenden Fisher and Trent Wetzel both had two hits. Graden Dohl pitched four strong innings and Nate Bieber earned the win in relief. Marek Mascho homered and doubled for Wellsboro.
• Entering the game with 789 career saves, senior Ben Franco’s program-record-tying 28 saves brought him to 817 in his career, making him the 36th player in Division III history to reach 800 career saves, as the Lycoming College men’s lacrosse team fell, 24-5, against the Catholic University of America in its Landmark Conference opener.
Franco stopped 19 shot attempts in the first half and added nine more saves in the last two quarters, helping him tie the program record of 28 saves in a game set by Michael Tenant against Ithaca in 2019.
Catholic established an early lead, ending the first period with a six-point advantage, 6-0. In the fifth and eighth minutes of the second quarter, senior Sean Farrell added goals for the Warriors (4-3 overall, 0-1 Landmark), putting Lycoming on the board. The Cardinals entered halftime with a nine-point advantage, 11-2.
To kick off the third quarter, senior Shayne Wilson jumped out in the second minute to score Lycoming’s third goal.
Freshman Cesar Carmona-Felipe followed up with 8:41 on the clock for his second goal of the season. After the Cardinals added two goals to begin the fourth-quarter scoring, sophomore Brogan Wooley pushed toward the cage to add Lycoming’s fifth goal.
• Senior Danny DeLucas led the Lycoming College baseball team with five hits, two runs and a RBI as it fell in a Landmark Conference doubleheader to Susquehanna University, 9-5 and 12-2.
In the first game, DeLucas had four hits, two runs and a RBI to pace a 13-hit attack from the Warriors (9-9 overall, 1-2 Landmark), as it fell victim to a pair of three-run innings from the River Hawks (10-6 overall, 3-1 Landmark).
Junior Brody Lindsey was 3 for 5 with a run, sophomore Sean Perkins was 2 for 4 with a run and sophomore Eric MacCluen was 2 for 4 with three RBI in the game for the Warriors.
The Warriors scored twice in the first, with DeLucas singling to center with one out before Lindsey singled, setting up an RBI single from junior A.J. Llorente, a Montoursville graduate. Perkins followed with a single to load the bases before MacCluen had a sac fly.
Down 5-2 in the third, the Warriors got a pair of runs back to close within a run. DeLucas singled to lead off and Perkins walked with two outs before a wild pitch advanced the runners, setting up a two-RBI single from MacCluen.
Down 9-4 in the sixth, the Warriors got their last run when senior Evan Mok doubled with two outs, took third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by DeLucas.
Penn College split a United East baseball doubleheader with Penn State Abington Saturday. The Wildcats dropped the first game, 16-10, before winning the nightcap, 8-5, to improve to 3-1 UE, 7-8 overall.
In game one, Penn College took a 3-0 lead in the second on a Matt Munoz single, an error, and Brandon Shane’s single to left. Abington pulled with one with two in the bottom of the second before Shawn Townsend got a run back with a single to left in the third. The Lions plated nine total runs in the third and fourth to propel themselves to the win.
Nathan Gustkey and Shane both finished with three hits, while Dallas Griess, Levi Purnell, Townsend, Jaydon Goebel, and Munoz all finished with two hits, with Purnell and Goebel both smacking home runs.
In game two, PCT jumped out to a 5-0 lead, with a run in the first and four in the top of the third. Purnell’s single in the first brought in the first run, while Townsend’s single, Munoz’ sac fly, and Shane’s two-run single in third gave the Wildcats their lead.
After the Lions struck for three in the third, and an error in the fourth kept PCT with a 6-3 advantage. Abington pulled within two, 6-4, in the sixth but Gustkey and Purnell added insurance runs in the seventh.
Lock Haven’s offense was clicking in the Bald Eagles’ home opener, but California (Pa.) rallied late to steal a 13-12 victory in PSAC action. Game two of today’s action was postponed due to rainy conditions and pushed to a later date.
Lock Haven moves to 10-12 on the season and 0-3 in PSAC West, while the Vulcans improve to 15-2 and 3-0 in conference play. Cal swept yesterday’s doubleheader at home.
In game one, the Bald Eagles belted out a season-high 17 hits and scored 12 runs, while six hitters recorded multiple base knocks.
Nathan Wise, Morgen Billotte, Bryce Vincent, Ethan Nagy, Nick White, and Lance Baldensperger all finished with two or more base hits for Lock Haven.
Mansfield hosted their first home game of the season from Joesph Shaute Field against the Kutztown Golden Bears, falling 11-10 in the first game before winning the first contest, 17-6.
The Golden Bears scored in the top of the first after an RBI single gave them a 1-0 lead in the first game.
Shane Stossel tied the game at 1-1 in the home half of the inning with a solo shot. In the second inning, both sides went quietly, but in the third, KU took a 4-1 advantage with an RBI double and back-to-back RBI singles off the Mountaineers starter.
Jacob Houtz got one back for the Mounties in the third with an RBI single to cut the deficit to two.
• A four-run first inning in the second game of the doubleheader and two key double plays helped the Lycoming College softball team post a 4-3 win over Susquehanna University to split the twinbill after falling in the opener, 4-0, in Landmark Conference action.
After Susquehanna (4-10 overall, 1-1 Landmark) scored in the first, the Warriors (9-2 overall, 1-1 Landmark) broke through in the bottom of the inning. Junior Claire Alexander, a South Williamsport graduate, singled to right to lead off and took second on a throwing error and third on a wild pitch before junior Alex Eckerson walked, setting up a double steal to tie the game.
Senior Rachel Daub singled and stole second, setting up a one-out RBI single from junior Mallory Rodarmel, a Loyalsock graduate. Rodarmel stole second and after a walk, junior Kristen George, a Montoursville graduate, delivered a sac fly before a wild pitch helped Rodarmel score.
The Warriors had three runners reach scoring position in the last five innings, but none could cross the plate. Susquehanna got a run back in the second, but an unconventional double play cut a runner down at the plate after a groundout to the pitcher. In the third, a liner to Alexander at short set up another double play. Susquehanna closed within a run in the fifth, but the Warriors left runners stranded at second in each of the last two innings.
Sophomore Kendall McAnelly, a Williamsport graduate, (3-0) pitched six innings, allowing six hits and two earned runs. She walked four and struck out two. Senior Avery Eiswerth, a Williamsport graduate, earned the save, her fourth of the year, with a strikeout in the seventh, as she allowed a hit and a walk. Hannah Foust (0-3) pitched one inning, allowing three hits, two walks and four runs for Susquehanna.
Penn College swept Rosemont in a doubleheader, 2-1 and 4-0 while the PCT pitching duo of Mackenzie Weaver and Makenzi Tice combined for 26 strikeouts. The Wildcats extended its winning streak to four games and 10-7 overall. The Ravens are 1-15.
In game one, Weaver fanned 10 Ravens in the seven-inning complete game effort while accounting for both of the Wildcats runs by crossing home on a Ryleigh Rinker single in the first inning and hitting an RBI sac fly in the fifth. Grace Lorson and Rinker both had a team-high two hits in the game.
In game two, Tice spun a career-high 16 batters and allowed just one hit in the game two victory while Weaver led the Wildcats at the plate with two hits including an RBI double in the fifth and a two-run single in the sixth.
Bella Schmitt and Maria Fratangelo hit back-to-back home runs to power the Lock Haven softball team to a 3-2 victory in game two of a PSAC Eastern Division doubleheader against West Chester at Lawrence Field. The Golden Rams won game one 18-2.
The Bald Eagles have split three series in a row to open their PSAC Eastern Division schedule, coming against Mansfield, Millersville and West Chester. Following Saturday’s action, The Haven is now 9-7 overall and 3-3 in the PSAC East.
Lock Haven played four games at Lawrence Field this weekend and opened up its home schedule 2-2 after splitting with Millersville and West Chester.
West Chester moves to 14-5 on the season and 2-2 in conference play.
Schmitt homered in each game of the doubleheader and Frantangelo wrapped up a steller weekend with her third big fly and ninth RBI.
In the nightcap, Talia Ross earned her fourth victory on the mound for The Haven as she pitched a complete game and allowed just two runs on seven hits and struck out seven Golden Ram sluggers.
Millersville earned a game one win against Mansfield, but the Mounties pushed back to pick up the 6-3 game two victory. Natalie Blackstone set her new career game high with four RBIs in game two, grabbing three hits and two doubles.
Reilly Storer picked up her first victory of her collegiate career in game two, allowing just one earned run.
Madison Bailey started things off for Mansfield with the first hit of the afternoon in the top of the third through the infield. Melissa Demo looked to drive her in with an infield single, but her at-bat restarted after she left the box early, keeping the first game scoreless.
• Senior Katie Maguire and junior Riley Block each scored, and freshman Emma Yanders saved 17 shots to lead the Lycoming College women’s lacrosse team as it fell, 26-2, against the Catholic University of America in Landmark Conference action.
After Catholic opened the first-quarter scoring in the second minute, Maguire followed up 40 seconds later to hammer a goal to the back of the cage. With seven seconds remaining on the clock in the first quarter, Block took a man-up free position shot that brought the score to 10-2.
Maguire snagged three ground balls and caused two turnovers, and junior Autumn Shahan followed with two ground balls and one caused turnover.
Yanders posted nine saves in the first half and added eight in the second for the Warriors (4-3 overall, 0-1 Landmark). In the cage for the Cardinals (2-6 overall, 1-0 Landmark), Alexandra Ragano and Jamie Handwerger each made two saves.
• Penn College dropped a 26-7 decision to St. Mary’s in a United East men’s lacrosse game Saturday. The Wildcats snapped a six-game winning streak and fell to 0-1 UE, 6-3 overall, while the Seahawks improved to 1-0, 6-3.
After St. Mary’s netted the first goal of the game, PCT answered when Jake Small found Elliot Dotson at 11:36 to tie the game. The Seahawks netted three straight to lead 4-1 before Elliott Dotson connected with AJ Dotson to get the Wildcats within two, 4-2, with 8:22 left in the first. SMC fired off consecutive goals before Owen Kupsey finished an Aidan McFalls pass with 57 seconds left to make it 6-3 after the first.
St. Mary’s outscored Penn College, 8-2, in the second to lead 14-5 at the break and outpaced PCT, 12-2, in the second half.
• The Lycoming College men’s tennis team faced a 7-0 setback against Goucher in Landmark Conference action.
Junior Josh Neidert, senior Matthew Baldridge and freshman Logan Hammond, a Loyalsock graduate, competed in No. 1 through No. 3 singles, respectively.
Freshman Kayvan Shams (a South Williamsport graduate), senior Mohamed Ebeid and sophomore Depesh Rai followed in No. 4 through No. 6 singles.
Sophomore Thomas Andersen also competed with Ebeid in No. 3 doubles.
• The Lycoming College women’s tennis team faced a 5-2 setback against Goucher. Junior Greta Kimble, a South Williamsport graduate, and freshman Yeanneth Rosado earned the points for the team in No. 5 and No. 6 singles.
In No. 1 singles, senior Rei Saar, a Montoursville graduate, rallied against Goucher’s Lucy Ingraham, finishing 6-4, 6-3. Senior Sarah Lanphear also started strong in No. 4 singles against Sarai Silveira with a 6-4, 6-1 finish. Junior Emma Kelchner and freshman Sadie Stahl, a South Williamsport graduate, also competed in singles play.
In No. 1 doubles, Saar and Kelchner kept Lucy Ingraham and Eliza Abady on their toes, finishing 6-4. Lanphear and Stahl followed suit in No. 2 doubles, posting a 6-4 finish.
• The Lock Haven women’s outdoor track and field team opened the 2025 outdoor season with a busy two days of action at the Lee University Invitational in Cleveland, Tennessee.
Overall, The Haven women turned in a number of strong individual efforts in the outdoor opener, and those performances led to victories and Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) championships qualifying marks.
Nicole Carroll (800 and 1,500), Jersey Shore graduate Aubrey Sechrist (800 and 1,500), Claire Hauser (800 and 3,000 steeplechase), Alyssa VanGorder (hammer throw), Maria Puglia (javelin throw), Clarissa Davis (shot put) and Reagan Irons (high jump).
Mansfield’s men’s track and field team finish seventh out of 21 teams at the Purple and Gold Invite, hosted by West Chester University.
Cahsid Raymond performed in the first event of the day,100-meter dash with a time of 11.05 leaving him in second place earning the team eight points. He was followed by teammate Ajani Gibson placing 46th in 12.58 seconds.
The next race for Mansfield was the 400-meter dash where Ibrahim Sheriff and Jonathan McDannell took places at 23rd with 55.70 and 27th 55.97.
A battle broke out during the 1500 meter between Noah Shedden (19th, 4:25.36), Nathaniel Welch (20th, 4:25.46), Seth Neal (11th, 4:18.16), Rylan Ebner (46th, 4:43.52) and Greysen Kupsky (55th, 4:57.27).
Mansfield’s women’s track and field team newcomer Minyhah Easterling makes impact at the Purple and Gold Invite. Easterling joined the team in her first meet with a shot put mark of 8th finishing 11.28 meters. The newcomer made a great first impression by now holding the fifth furthest distance in program history in the shot put.
Blaze Wood competed in discus at the beginning of the day with a mark of 20.76 meters taking 29th place.
Following up on the field with Wood, were Marissa Allen and Alexis McNitt debuting in javelin for the first time in their collegiate careers. Wood placed 9th with 26.25 meters, McNitt 14th with 24.96 meters and Allen 20th with 15.14 meters.
