Local roundup: Muncy girls, boys both fall in Mid-Penn Championship games
Muncy suffered its first league loss of the season with a loss in the Mid-Penn Championship game to Northwest on the road on Friday evening, 33-29.
Muncy started the game strong with a 15-7 lead, but the Indians’ offense struggled from there. Muncy scored just 14 points over the final three quarters, allowing Northwest to take the lead and secure the win.
Rosie Zalonis led Muncy with eight points and Ava Eyer scored seven. Addie Eyer had a team-high six rebounds while Addi Gresh grabbed four and Eyer led the team with four assists.
Milton defeated Central Mountain in girls basketball, 56-40. Liz Shrock had a huge game for the Black Panthers with a near quadruple double. She had nine points, 14 rebounds, seven assists and seven steals while also contributing five blocks.
Carrie King had nine boards and six assists. Milton’s Addison Wenzel led the team wtih 18 points while Kiley Long added 14. Milton also saw Amelia Gainer add nine points.
Central Mountain saw Camdyn Weaver score 14 points and Lena Walker add 13, but it wasn’t quite enough for the Wildcats.
• Muncy came up shy in the Mid-Penn Championship game in boys basketball at Northwest, 52-38, as the Rangers won the league title.
The Indians (18-5) saw a pair of double-digit scorers in Kohen Meyer’s 14 points and Dominic Guardini’s 11.
Muncy held a 16-8 lead after the first quarter, but Muncy struggled from there, never scoring more than nine in a single quarter the final three quarters as Northwest scored at least 11.
In the second half, the Rangers outscored the Indians, 29-13.
North Penn-Mansfield fell to Troy, 69-56, in the NTL Showdown Classic. Troy had five players reach double figures, led by Lincoln Chimics’ 19 points and Jack Burbage’s 15.
Joseph Frye scored 14, Ean Woodward added 11 and Trey Teribury scored 10. Mansfield saw a big game from Cooper Shaw, who scored 25 points. Alex Davis chipped in 10 for Mansfield.
Montgomery had a trio of double-digit scorers lift the Red Raiders to a 50-33 win against Millville. Parker Bennett scored 16 points, Damaj Stewart-Williams scored 15 and Hayden Wilt added 10 for the Red Raiders.
Montgomery led 11-9 after the first quarter but pulled away in the second thanks to outscoring the Quakers, 15-2.
• Junior first baseman A.J. Llorente, a Montoursville graduate, led the Lycoming College baseball team with three hits in his first day with the team and junior third baseman Brody Lindsey added two hits and two RBI, as Lycoming fell in a pair of games to Greensboro College, 11-1 and 13-4, at Truist Point Park.
Lindsey and Llorente led the Warriors (0-2 overall) in the nightcap, with Lindsey going 2-for-4 with a double, a run and two RBI and Llorente going 2 for 4 with a run.
Greensboro (2-0 overall) had two four-run innings and scored nine runs before Lycoming scored two in the seventh.
Sophomore shortstop Sean Perkins walked to lead off before Lindsey delivered an RBI double to center field. He moved to third on a single by Llorente and scored on a wild pitch.
After the Pride scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh, the Warriors added two more in the eighth. Junior center fielder Nick Reeder, a Montoursville graduate, led off with an infield single, stole second and took third on a passed ball. Senior left fielder Danny DeLucas walked. After a strikeout, Lindsey reached on another infield single to drive in Reeder and Llorente scored DeLucas with a single to left.
Hardy demoralized by a tough start in game one of an opening-day doubleheader at Virginia Tech, the Bucknell baseball team bounced back for an 8-6 win over the Hokies in the nightcap on a frigid day at English Field at Atlantic Union Bank Park. Reigning Patriot League Rookie of the Year Chris Morabito delivered a clutch two-strike, two-out, three-run triple to give Bucknell the lead in the top of the seventh, and the bullpen slammed the door as four relievers combined to allow just an unearned run over 5 1/3 innings.
The Bison defeated Virginia Tech for the first time in six all-time meetings, and it was Bucknell’s first win over an Atlantic Coast Conference team since beating Duke by an identical 8-6 score in 2022.
Two of Bucknell’s four relief pitchers hit milestones in the game-two win. Freshman Tyler Hawkins got four big outs and earned his first win in his collegiate debut. Junior Hadley Maxwell, who was limited to five appearances last season due to injury, was impressive in the ninth inning en route to his first career save.
The two teams played a doubleheader on Friday with rain in the forecast for Saturday. The three-game series will resume on Sunday at 1 p.m., with the rubber game streaming on ACC Network Extra.
• Keiva Middleton pitched a complete game and Madison Hardy homered to lift the Lock Haven softball team to a 4-2 victory over North Greenville in the nightcap of a non-conference doubleheader. The Bald Eagles fell 4-3 on a walk off to The University of Virginia’s College at Wise (UVA Wise) in game one of the day.
The Bald Eagles end the weekend with a 2-2 overall record after splitting both days against UVA Wise and North Greenville.
In game one, UVA Wise opened the scoring with one run in the bottom of the second, but Lock Haven worked out of the jam by stranding runners at second and third.
The Bald Eagles threated with runners in the top of the fifth, but the Cavs threw out a runner at home and worked in and out of trouble.
• Penn College dropped a 21-12 decision to Susquehanna in a non-conference men’s lacrosse match Friday. The Wildcats fell to 0-1, while the River Hawks improved to 1-0.
The Wildcats struck first in the 11th minute when Brendan Kuczma found Gage McClune, and were ahead 2-1, with nine minutes left after Elliot Dotson netted an unassisted tally. Susquehanna scored the next five goals, spanning the end of the first quarter and early in the second, to take a 6-2 lead. PCT made it 6-3 when Elliot Dotson connected with A.J. Dotson at 9:44 before the Hawks scored eight straight to lead 14-3 at halftime.
Susquehanna increased its lead to 18-3 with 7:03 left in the third before Aidan McFalls found the back of the net with 4:30 left. After a man-up goal from SU, McClune, Jake Small, and A.J. Dotson netted shots to get PCT within 12, 19-7, at the end of the third. The Wildcats outscored Susquehanna, 5-2, in the fourth.
A.J. Dotson paced the offense with three goals, while Elliot Dotson finished with seven points, on one goal and six assists. PCT cleared 19 of 24 attempts and won 18 of 37 faceoffs.
• Freshman Sean Martinez led the Lycoming College men’s swimming team by finishing 16th in the 500-yard freestyle at the Landmark Conference Championships.
Martinez placed 16th in the 500-yard freestyle preliminary event, finishing with a personal-best time of 5:04.79. He improved his season-time by 5.33 seconds. Martinez followed up in the 500-yard consolation final with a 5:08.45 to take 16th in the event.
Sophomore Drew Degnan recorded a 23.24 finish in the 50-yard freestyle, placing 25th in the event. Degnan surpassed his previous-best in the 50-yard freestyle (23.32), which he set at the Electric City Invitational.
Senior Brian Hulsey posted a personal-best time of 25.92 in the 50-yard freestyle and sophomore Tyler Bronson followed suit with a 31.59 finish. Hulsey’s time dropped 0.84 seconds and Bronson’s time improved by 1.94 seconds. Hulsey set his previous best at the Electric City Invitational with a 26.76 finish, which he improved by almost a full second. Bronson also set a personal record in the event, beating the 30.75 time that he swam in a dual against King’s College (Pa.).
• The Lock Haven women’s track and field team kicked off a busy weekend by competing in Youngstown State University’s Last Chance Meet and the Widener Indoor Classic.
Natalie Gentzel had the highest place finish of the day, finishing sixth with a time of 1:01.39 in the 400 dash. Lillian Bradley had an impressive day, earning sixth and ninth place in the 200 (26.96) and 60 dashes (8.36), respectively.
Kelci Carle secured a ninth-place finish with a time of 10.53 in the 60 hurdles.
Clarissa Davis had another impressive week, earning eighth place in the shot put with a mark of 38 feet, 11 inches. Mallory Eck placed 12th in the shot put with a mark of 37-11 1/2.
On the men’s side, Eric Zalar put on an impressive performance in the weight throw with a distance of 60-4 3/4, placing first. The personal-best throw gave Zalar his first NCAA Championship mark and is the second-best throw in Lock Haven history.
The team of Lukas Epitropakis, Cam Marquette, Skylar Small and Rocky Romani ran to a fourth-place finisih in the 1,600 relay in 3:36.44 and in the 800, Small ran a personal-best time of 1:59.55 for a top-10 finish.
