Williamsport sees plenty of swimmers drop times in tri-meet loss vs. Cumberland Valley, Parkland
Williamsport’s swimmers knew they would be in for an extremely tough meet on Saturday morning against both Cumberland Valley and Parkland. The Trojans brought two busses to Williamsport with more than 50 swimmers competing, and Cumberland Valley’s roster wasn’t small either.
In the end, both Cumberland Valley and Parkland’s numbers got the better of Williamsport as Parkland’s girls won with 180 points and the boys won with 145. Cumberland Valley took second in both competitions as the girls were second with 100 and boys scored 116. The Millionaire girls scored 35 points and the boys scored 53.
“We knew we weren’t going to come out here and beat anybody as far as the team goes. They have way too many numbers over us, but the goal was for everyone to drop time,” Williamsport coach Brett Johnson said.
“They’re two really big teas and they have a lot of good swimmers and a lot of good depth, so we knew coming in that we were going to just try our best,” Williamsport’s Kendall Cohick added.
While Williamsport accumulated just one individual win and a relay victory on Saturday afternoon, the Millionaires competed hard throughout the tri-meet and were in numerous close races.
Williamsport’s lone victory came from standout Keller Griswold, who won the 100 fly in an extremely close race by just 0.03 seconds. Griswold beat Parkland’s Thomas Price with a time of 53.51 to Price’s 53.54.
Williamsport opened the tri-meet with a solid 200 medley relay performance on the boys side. That’s where Cooper Allmaras, Evan Summers, Griswold and Brady Ross swam a time of 1:39.87, winning by just .30 seconds over Cumberland Valley.
“That relay’s going to do really well as this season continues to progress. I think it’s a good combination of kids, they all have a goal in their mind and they all have the same and that’s states A finals,” Johnson said. “So that is what they’re working for and I think they’re going to get there.”
Williamsport had numerous swimmers drop time on Saturday, something Johnson was more than happy to see.
“That was the goal is to get them to drop time. Some kids went up, but for the most part we had a lot of drops today which is positive for a meet like this,” Johnson said.
The boys 100 back was a tight race down the stretch as Parkland’s Gabe Krizel and Quinn Conway, in addition to WIlliamsport’s Allmaras, all broke a minute in the race. Krizel won in 57.40 while Conway took second in 58.21 with Allmaras right behind him in 58.86. Allmaras also shaved roughly half a second off his time.
In the girls 100 back, Williamsport’s Kendall Cohick swam a time of 1:03.24 to take third place, shaving 0.21 seconds off her time in the process. Parkland’s Sydney LaBaugh won with a time of 58.81, the only swimmer to break a minute in the race.
“I think I did OK (today). I’m just trying to improve working through some stuff, so hopefully by the end of the season I can get through that better,” Cohick said of her performances.
Williamsport’s Ross swam a solid race in the 500 free, shaving nine seconds off his time, en route to a fourth-place finish in 5:09.47. Ross just missed reaching the top 3 finishers by less than a second. Parkland’s Dominic Faenza was a first-place finisher in 4:54.32.
Wiliamsport’s Kiley Persun swam a 5:58.34 in the girls 500 free race, nine seconds behind Cumberland Valley’s Caroline Hancock (5:49.62). Cumberland Valley’s Mary Boone won in 5:13.00.
Summers of Williamsport finished second in the 200 IM with a time of 2:09.68 as Cumberland Valley’s Bode Groh won in 2:03.28.
In the boys 100 breast, Williamsport’s Evan Summers started the race strong in the first two laps, but Cumberland Valley’s Bode Groh gained separation by just a hair en route to winning by a second over Summers. Groh won in 58.05 while Summers swam a 59.65 as the two swimmers were the only two to break a minute in the event.
“I just saw some kids who have been struggling a little bit dropping time in this meet and it helps their self esteem just moving forward,” Johnson said on what stood out in Saturday’s tri-meet. “Some of them were a little bit down because things didn’t quite go as well, but moving forward, it shows them that we can get faster.”
In the boys 200 free, Griswold and Cumberland Valley’s Mitch Yearn were close before Parkland’s Dominic Faenza started to take the lead on the third race. He held close for the lead for the final two laps for a narrow victory.
In the boys 200 IM, Williamsport’s Evan Summers was in a close race for the first half against both Parkland’s Colton Chung and Cumberland Valley’s Bode Groh before Groh eventually took the win in the final lap.
Williamsport’s Kyla Becker took third in the 100 breast after swimming a time of 1:19.77, shaving off two seconds as well. Parkland’s Kelsey McPeek won in 1:09.59. Williamsport’s Miley Johnson also swam in the event, finishing with a time of 1:31.50.
Williamsport had a third-place finish in the boys 200 free relay with the foursome of Summers, Ross, Allmaras and Griswold who swam a time of 1:33.38. Cumberland Valley’s David Michael Socks II, Groh, Hearn and Wyatt Boland won in 1:28.37, setting a Williamsport pool record in the process that stood since 2009.
Williamsport’s Cohick, Naomi Lee, Kiley Persun and Aviya Halstead shaved off 0.01 seconds in the girls 200 free relay and ended up taking third place. The Millionaires were trailing Cumberland Valley slightly after the first swimmer of the relay, but Cumberland Valley and Parkland slowly gained separation.
Cohick pointed out how beneficial Saturday’s meet was against two large schools and seeing teammates shave time.
“It’s really good to see them drop times and a lot of people did today. It’s good to see that improvement, especially swimming against these good teams. It shows that we an come here and just do our best and just focus on ourselves and not get so worked up about stuff,” Cohick said. “We swim a lot of smaller schools a lot of the time, so these bigger schools gives us a lot of competition and it prepares you for bigger meets in the future.”
