Local roundup: Williamsport girls volleyball defeats Hughesville, 3-0

Williamsport defeated Hughesville in girls volleyball, 3-0 (25-15, 25-5, 25-11). Belle Morrow had a team-high 23 assists while adding five kills and a team-high 20 points with nine digs. Jayden Ulmer had seven kills, seven points, one dig and a block.

Mollie Roan recorded 19 points, Avani Rainier had 10 points and eight kills, Ava Fischer had five points and Tanaya Holmes recorded four points.

Geiani Whaley had two assists, four kills and three digs to go along with a block.

Williamsport also saw Libby Radspinner have five assists. Statistics for Hughesville were not available.

Central Mountain posted a 3-0 win over Lewisburg (25-13, 25-12, 25-7). In the third set, Central Mountain jumped out to a 7-0 lead and cruised the remainder of the way.

Wellsboro lost its first set to Athens, 25-18, but responded with three straight 25-12, 27-25, 25-15 to secure a 3-1 win over its NTL rivals. Paige Logsdon had a team-high 11 kills for Wellsboro while Lexi Urena had 10. Ellie Largey had 15 assists and 15 points and Taylor Main had 10 assists, 12 points and 14 digs. maddy Cruttenden led Wellsboro with 27 digs.

• Melanie Esh scored the game winning goal with four minutes remaining as the Mansfield field hockey team (3-0) completed their comeback against the Lander Bearcats (1-1), 2-1, in their neutral site thriller.

Both teams used the early time to adjust to the neutral site, with only one shot registered on goal by Kenedy Stroup midway into the first quarter. Lander picked up three corners in the first fifteen, but the Mountie defense held strong for a quiet start to the non-conference battle.

• Senior Katryn Yocum won her second meet of the season to lead the Lycoming College women’s cross country, which placed five in the top 10 to defeat four teams at the Eagle Invite at Indian Valley Middle School.

In addition to the five women in the top 10, two men, junior Kenneth Draper, a Hughedville graduate, and sophomore Avery Rosan finished in the top 10 of the men’s race, as the men finished second in a field of five teams on the 6K course.

Yocum, who also finished first at a dual meet with Penn College on Sept. 3, posted a time of 20:31.1 to take the women’s 5K race, finishing nearly 1:45 ahead of the field of 24 runners. Sophomore Ella Scott took fourth in 22:59.9, just ahead of sophomore Sydney Taylor (fifth, 23:16.8) and senior Maddy O’Connor (sixth, 23:59.4). Sophomore Gwyn Fox rounded out the Warriors’ scoring five, taking 10th in 24.45.50.
