Local roundup: South boys score late to break up tie and secure a narrow win vs. Montgomery

The Montgomery junior high softball team won the Eric Long Memorial Tournament in Shikellamy this past Saturday. They were the intermediate bracket champions. Friday night they played Central Columbia in the opening round. It was a close game, but they ended up losing, 6-5. This dropped the team down to the losers bracket, of the double elimination tournament. Saturday they played from 8 a.m. until 9 p.m to win the tournament. Montgomery played six games on Saturday, five of those games back to back. Montgomery beat Shikellamy (17-2), Selinsgrove (13-0), Loyalsock (10-4), Shamokin (15-6) and Central Columbia (4-3 and 11-8). On the ground is Kaydence Matlack and Brooke Dietrich. In the second row is Leila Hampton and Jaelyn Hanford. In the third row is Ali Herb, Ramona Kroll, Delaney Harper and Alex Jenkins. In the fourth row is Kylie Houseknecht and Madie Hamm. Not pictured is Bella Muhl.

Montgomery’s Camden Dalrymple and Dylan Sherman both scored in a two-minute span and all of a sudden a two-goal lead was a tied game at 2-all in the second half.

But South Williamsport quickly struck back and reclaimed the lead. Two minutes after Sherman’s goal, South’s Josh Lynn scored off an Evan Ogden assist to give the Mounties’ a 3-2 win against Montgomery in an exciting Mid-Penn boys soccer game.

Montoursville scored all four of its goals in the second half en route to a 4-0 win over Shikellamy. Sean Frey and CJ Lucas both had goals while Gavin Hawley had two goals and two assists.

Montoursville’s Quinn Winslow also dished out an assist.

Brayden Ungard had two goals and Evan Brittan dished out two assists as Williamsport defeated Danville, 4-3. Williamsport saw Connor Hofstrom and Issac Balsa both score as well. Spencer Kaar added an assist and Max Fink had three saves.

The Millionaires out-shot Danville, 12-6.

North Penn-Liberty defeated Jersey Shore, 3-2. Tate Strange had two goals and Brady Stetter added one for the Mounties. The Bulldogs saw Gabe Welshans and Dylan Hensler both score.

Both teams fired 13 shots on goal.

David Seeling was fed a pass by Micaiah Fitch late in the second half and buried it, giving Wellsboro a 1-0 lead which would hold up against Athens. The Green Hornets only allowed five shots on goal as Camden Tom recorded the shutout in goal.

“After giving up five goals on Saturday, we were pleased to see our keeper and defensive line keep a clean sheet tonight,” Wellsboro coach Todd Fitch said. “Although we were unable to move the ball in our attacking half, Athens did a good job limiting our opportunities at goal. Converting on a free kick was the difference for us in this match.”

Central Mountain boys soccer defeated Mifflinburg, 2-0, as Griffin Connor and Cole Cooper both recorded goals. Isaiah Brinker, Bryce Warren, Nolan Cross, Cam Counsil and Gavin Karstetter played well defensively for Central Mountain.

• Muncy lost to Millville in double overtime, 2-1, in a Mid-Penn girls soccer contest. Ava Eyer scored off an Anna Zalonis assist to give Muncy a 1-0 lead before Millville would tie it up.

In the second overtime period, Larissa Evans scored the game-winner on a penalty kick. Muncy fired 41 shots on goal in the loss.

South Williamsport scored eight first-half goals in a 10-1 rout against Sullivan County. Ella Moore had three goals and five assists, both team highs, while Olivia Loudenslager and Emma Ryback scored twice.

• Sophomores Will Eberz and Connor Shanahan fired an 80 and 81, respectively, to lead the Lycoming College golf team, which competed on a wet Monday in the Dickinson Fall Invitational.

The Warriors finished 19th in the 20-team field with a 361, as junior Dylan Seck (91) and freshman Gabe Cendoma, a St. John Neumann graduate, rounded out the team’s scoring four. Millersville won the team title with a 292. Millersville’s Timothy Peters earned medalist honors with a 5-under-par 67.

Eberz finished tied for 52nd in the 99-player field and Shanahan was 66th. Eberz posted 11 pars and shot a 2-over-par 38 on the front nine. Shanahan had nine birdies, shot a 4-over-par 40 on the back nine and birdied the par-4, 299-yard No. 15.

• After notching four saves against both regionally-ranked Rutgers-Newark and nationally-ranked John Carroll for the Lycoming College men’s soccer team, first-year Jace Bennett earned his second career Landmark Conference Defensive Player of the Week recognition.

Bennett stopped four shots from Rutgers-Newark, helping the Warriors (5-1-1 overall) secure a 2-0 win over Region IV’s sixth-ranked team.
