Marjorie Barton Winder

Marjorie Barton Winder, 100, formerly of Hughesville, died on March 12, 2025, at The Williamsport Home Apartments with family members at her side.
Born Dec. 16, 1924 in Port Allegany, she was the daughter of Earl and Florence Barton. She graduated from Hughesville High School in 1942, and from Susquehanna University in 1946.
Marjorie was secretary to the Susquehanna University President from 1946 to 1947. She kept books for the Leon Myers and Son Lumber Company along with working on the family’s Angus cattle farm, Pennridge Farm, near Strawbridge until 1972. She worked at the Lockard Insurance Agency in Hughesville for 17 years until retirement.
Marjorie was a member of Covenant Central Presbyterian Church, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority (since 1947), Williamsport Women’s Club, the Daughters of the American Revolution and the former Williamsport Bridge Club. She held Life Master status in the American Contract Bridge League.
Marjorie always had a quick smile for those she met, and was a happy, helpful person. She liked to laugh and to make others laugh. She got great joy from teaching the game of bridge to anyone that was interested. She joked she had four children so they would always have bridge players in the house.
After the COVID pandemic, Marjorie continued to play bridge online four or five days a week with family and friends from Massachusetts to Florida. Besides bridge, she enjoyed jigsaw and crossword puzzles, along with the daily Sudoku.
Marjorie especially enjoyed keeping in touch with family, friends and classmates. During the month of December, she loved making her “Christmas calls,” in place of sending out cards.
Marjorie is survived by one sister, Ann Horn, of Saginaw, Mich.; two sons, Keith Myers (Nanci), of Hanson, Mass. and Jay Myers (Bonny), of Hughesville; two daughters, Karen Smith (Lyman), of Laporte, and Beth Myers, of Hughesville; and one stepdaughter, Nancy Cheney (Pete), of Bear, Del. Marjorie was blessed with six grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren; as well as five nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Leon C. Myers Jr., to whom she was married from 1947 to 1978. In 2004, Marjorie married J. Byrton D. Winder, whom she had dated in high school. She enjoyed handing out copies of an article written about them entitled “Second Chances” – the story of how they were reunited after 60 years. They enjoyed 10 years of marriage until his passing in 2015.
A private interment will be conducted at Twin Hills Memorial Park at the convenience of the family with the Reverend Lyman M. Smith officiating. A Celebration of Marjorie’s Life will be held on Sunday, May 25 at noon, at Kedron United Methodist Church in Strawbridge with a luncheon to follow.
Contributions in memory of Marjorie Barton Winder can be made to Kedron United Methodist Church (c/o Donna Robbins, 392 Owl Hill Rd, Muncy Valley PA, 17758) or a charity of your choice.
