Kitty Lou Hofer

Kitty Lou Hofer, 82, of Montoursville, died Monday, March 17, 2025, at The Gatehouse at Divine Providence. Born July 31, 1942, in Montoursville, she was the daughter of the late Edward D. and the late Sarah B. (Reeder) Sterner.
Kitty married James Lester Hofer on October 25, 1963, and shared 59 years of marriage prior to his passing on August 26, 2023.
Kitty was a devoted wife and mother who enjoyed gardening at home and with several garden clubs. She served faithfully at Faith Church, particularly with the children’s ministry, the food bank, and the caring ministry. In her earlier life she enjoyed tennis, country skiing and travel, especially to Ireland. Kitty made the time to work full time as a nurse, raise two boys and continue her education, eventually earning a master’s degree in nursing after becoming a school nurse. Kitty’s time as a school nurse for the South Williamsport school district allowed her to help the next generations of students. Kitty loved her time as a school nurse as much as anything else in her life. Kitty touched the lives of many people whom she inspired to follow in her footsteps into healthcare. After her retirement as a school nurse, Kitty continued to serve others, working as a nurse with the behavioral health department at UPMC. In her later life, Kitty used her love of family and education to start genealogical research, tracing her family lineage back several generations.
Kitty is survived by her sons, Carl David Hofer, and Michael James Hofer, both of Montoursville.
In addition to her parents, and husband, James Lester Hofer, Kitty is pre-deceased by a brother, Edward D. Sterner.
Graveside Service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, March 28, 2025, at Montoursville Cemetery, with her pastor Rev. Larry L. Leland, Jr. officiating.
The family will provide flowers and suggest memorial contributions to the education of nursing at UPMC. Please make checks out to Susquehanna Health Foundation in memory of Kitty Hofer.
Arrangements have been entrusted to McCarty Thomas Funeral Home, Montoursville.
