Jack G. Snyder, Sr.

Jack G. Snyder, Sr., 93, of Williamsport, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 17, 2025, at Rose View Center.

Born September 27, 1931, in Williamsport, he was the son of Orville Miller and Ruth N. (Snyder) Fisher and was later adopted and raised by his loving parents, Augustus F. and Anna H. (McNeal) Snyder.

Jack’s early life was spent in Williamsport, where he graduated from Williamsport Area High School class of 1949, taking aviation courses that sparked a lifelong interest in flight. His passion for service was evident early on, as he joined the U.S. Air Force, serving his country with honor. After his military service, Jack returned to Williamsport and began working as a laborer at Avco and Darling Valve. His dedication to helping others led him to a career as a firefighter with the City of Williamsport. Starting as a call man, Jack’s keen instincts and steadfast courage led him to become an arson inspector and eventually the respected Fire Deputy Chief. After retiring in 1985, following 26 years of distinguished service, he continued to share his expertise in a part-time capacity with the Williamsport Building at the City of Williamsport for over 40 years.

A man of faith, Jack was a long-standing member of St. Luke Lutheran Church. His commitment to camaraderie and service was further exemplified through his involvement with the American Legion Post #1 and the American Association of Retired Firefighters. Jack’s hobbies included collecting mini fire trucks, a nod to his career and passion, and he could often be found enjoying his favorite game shows, a simple pleasure that brought him much joy.

Jack is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Deloris E. (Saar) Snyder, and their children: Jack G. Snyder, Jr. of Williamsport; Gail A. Ritchey (Charles) of Linden; Deborah K. Swinehart (Edward) of Nisbet; and Jacqueline R. “Jackie” Wipff (Truman) of Georgetown. He was a proud grandfather to seven grandchildren: Jason, Blake (Jessica), Spencer (Michaela), Ben, Lacy, Emily (Jake), and Cortney; and a great-grandfather to Thaylin, Korbin, Marc, Joshua, Marshall, Finn, Merrick, and the anticipated arrival of Thomas. His faithful dog, Pepper, also survives him.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.

A graveside service to honor the life of Jack will be announced at a later date in Wildwood Cemetery.
