Traffic stop for vehicle code infraction leads to felony drug, firearm charges for driver

A traffic stop Wednesday night for a minor vehicle code infraction resulted in city police arresting the driver on felony drug and firearm charges.

Driving a 2008 Ford Focus, Amontae Morris Pinkney was stopped by Patrolman Andrew Stevens in the 1100 block of Chester Street for an expired license plate on the car about 6 p.m , it was stated in an affidavit.

“While speaking with Pinkney, a strong odor of burnt marijuana was coming from the vehicle,” the officer said in the document.

When asked about the odor, Pinkney “opened the car’s center console, removed two pouches and began dumping marijuana out the driver’s window onto my boots and ground,” Stevens said the affidavit.

Pinkney, 18, of 750 W. Edwin St, apartment 2C was ordered out of the car and searched. Stevens said the teen had on him an assortment of alprazolam and oxycodone pills without any prescription for them, it was alleged. Pinkney gave his consent for Stevens to search the car. In an addition to finding another pouch of suspected marijuana, the officers recovered a loaded handgun that was reported stolen in the city back in June 2023, the affidavit stated.

Pinkney was taken to police headquarters and while being searched, an officer discovered a bag of six grams of suspected crack cocaine hidden in the teen’s private parts, the affidavit stated.

Shortly before 11 p.m., Pinkney, who is on juvenile probation for assault, was arraigned before District Judge William Solomon on felony charges of receiving stolen property, carrying a firearm without a license, three counts of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance plus four misdemeanor drug charges. He was committed to the Lycoming County Prison in lieu of $125,000 bail.

Starting at $2.99/week.
