President Obama maintained a scheduled fundraiser last week on the day a passenger jet carrying Americans was shot down. Should presidents cancel fundraising event appearances when there are serious events involving the country unfolding?

  1. No, they are allowed and capable of handling such activities while addressing serious issues affecting the country.
  2. Yes, its distasteful and indicates a president, no matter who it is, is tone-deaf to the realities affecting the country.
  3. It depends on the seriousness and complexity of the event. In this case the fundraising appearance should have been canceled.

I'm sure the fund raiser could make $$ without the President present! After all there was a possible threat to our country. I would think that everyone would understand the President leaving to take care of pressing matters concerning our country.

And some people blamed President Bush for remaining in the classroom with the young children reading a book when the second plane crashed into the second twin tower and "America was under attack". If he would have abruptly left, he would have gotten blamed for upsetting the children.

There are other people in an administration "doing the work" because the President can't do everything.

Damned if you do and*******if you don't. There needs to be some margins of error and judgement around some of these things.

Smid1972: Thanks for clearing that up but, as far as security goes it doesn't matter what the President is doing whether giving the 'State of the Union" address or going to a fund raiser, they are being paid anyway. As far as the cost of the 'fund raising' events this has nothing to do with taxpayers money,it's donated money from the public. I think we're on the same page.

MECURY2, awesome, it's been too long for these debates. In all seriousness, my remark " the fundraiser itself cost more money than they could raise, so how about not wasting taxpayers money on security and not have them at all" was a general remark for all presidents. not just the current one.

Smid1972: No problem just didn't know what you were disagreeing to in your comment. As far as your 7/23-12:24am comment, haven't all presidents in the past done the same as far as 'fund raising'? I forgot this is President Obama doing this now and that's what makes it wrong, right? Get a good night sleep!

He also attended fund raisers in Texas right in the middle of the border crisis, even refusing at first to meet with the Governor to discuss the crisis until media pressured him to doing so and he neglected to actually visit the border to see the scope of the crisis. IMO, he needs to revisit his priorities. For those that choose to respond comparing his actions to those of Bush or Republicans in Congress, ask yourself if it makes it anymore acceptable.

What a horrible question!!! the fundraiser itself cost more money than they could raise, so how about not wasting taxpayers money on security and not have them at all. On another note, not to say the Americans that died aren't important, but Americans die everyday so should we stop every time someone dies in this country? instead do them justice by finding out what happened and bringing them to justice!!! IMO
