"Plein Air Painting," from 9 to 11 a.m. Sunday, presented by Alice Kelsey at the Dale/Engle/Walker House, 1471 Strawbridge Road. This workshop is part of "Plein Air Day." Local artist Alice Kelsey will conduct a presentation and demonstration about approaches to painting outdoors.
She will discuss working methods and supplies for 'plein air' painting, and share examples of her equipment and artwork. Kelsey will demonstrate pastel painting (outdoors if weather permits), and attendees are encouraged to try out plein air sketching. Both non-artists and artists of all levels are welcome. Wear comfortable, warm clothes (layers recommended) and footwear for being outside. Bring a pencil and sketchbook to create en plein air. Group limit is 30.
"Creating a Lasting Piece of Furniture," at 6:30 p.m. Monday, presented by 2014 featured artist John C. Sterling at the Public Library for Union County, 255 Reitz Blvd. Sterling will explain the process from idea through construction, using several different pieces of furniture he has constructed himself. He will cover proper selection of materials, joinery and finishing. Sterling started building his own furniture in his mid-20s.
Building pieces and seeing results reinforced his skills and style. He learned his craft gradually by making mistakes, taking risks, experimenting with different techniques and getting feedback from others. Group limit is 50.

Participants will be given the opportunity to try their hand at woodcarving. Knives and a carving blank will be provided. Jarrett got his start in woodcarving by carving neckerchief slides with the Boy Scouts. He retired from the Milton Area School District where he worked 35 years as an industrial arts and technology education instructor.
