Sarah Hall, an A student who has a yellow belt in karate and plays softball, recently wanted to reach out to a family in need, and that is what she did for her birthday.
When Hall heard about a family that the Favors Forward Foundation was helping, the 11-year-old, fifth grade student at Schick Elementary school decided she would contact her family and friends and asked them to donate to the cause, instead of buying her presents.
"I wanted to give presents to a family who needs it more than I do," said Hall, when asked why she wanted to help the family.
The family she helped was a mother and six children.
Favors Forward Foundation's mission is to provide a network of volunteers uniting their time, talent and treasures to assist children and adults in Lycoming County facing life-changing hardships.
Hardships include job loss, disability, illness, death in the family, domestic violence, separation and divorce, lack of a support system, natural disaster, military deployment and more.
The focus is individuals and families that are not receiving ongoing assistance from other agencies and organizations.
Hall has joined the ranks of Favors Forward volunteers and has raised more than $220 for "Mary's Fund."
Hall first heard of Favors Forward through her dance class at Welteroth's Dance Academy. Her class adopted one of the families during Favors Forward's Adopt a Family for the Holidays project.
"Sarah really cares about families," said her mother, Cathy.
"(I) would do it again, as it gave me a really good feeling," Hall said.
Hall's advice to other children her age is, "just do it. (It makes) people happy and it gives you a really good feeling."
Hall also helps in the special needs class in her school and in the past has helped with the Super Stars program at the YMCA.
Favors Forward programs include Time, Talent, and Treasures; Adopt a Student Back to School; Spring Clean Up; Kids to Summer Camp; Partners to Promise Youth Enrichment; and the Adopt a Family for the Holidays.
