Aah. Spring is in the air, despite what that grumpy groundhog predicts. For spring means local and area high schools are rehearsing their musical productions to be presented in the next few months and submitted in the Community Theatre League's Ray of Light competition.
The annual Ray of Light awards ceremony is scheduled for May 18, at the Community Arts Center, 220 W. Fourth St. With CTL's Jacquie Engel coordinating the program to promote and develop the brightest and the best in high schools music theatre departments and drama clubs, the Ray of Light continues to grow in popularity and is televised by WNEP 2.
The year long competition begins in the fall with schools presenting plays (comedies or dramas). Spring brings the second phase as high schools within a 40-mile radius of Williamsport's Community Theatre League produce a musical. 2014 finds high schools from Lycoming, Clinton, Tioga, Union, Northumberland and Synder counties submitting entries.
"Thirteen may be lucky number as 2014 marks one of the highest numbers of schools presenting musicals in our six years," Engel said. "We are happy to welcome Liberty and Selinsgrove high schools who are aboard for the first time."
Judges with detailed scoring sheets travel to each high school for the judging in several categories. With a limited number of available weekends, CTL judges will be doing double and even triple duty when two or three schools' production dates overlap on the same weekend.
For the musical entries, Ray of Light awards are given for Best Principal and Best Featured Actor/Actresses in both Large Scale and Small Scale Musicals, and to schools for best ensemble performance, and outstanding choreography.
