SELINSGROVE - The Courtyard Theater has announced audition dates for its next musical production. The theater is currently in production of two new nonmusical productions comedy, "A Tuna Christmas," which opens on Nov. 29, and the romantic comedy, "Same Time, Next Year," which debuts on Feb. 7. Both of these plays will run for two successive weekends with performances at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday nights 2 p.m. Sundays.
The team of Art Lieberman and Bob Taylor, owners of the theater, has selected the long-running Broadway hit "Rent" as their next musical which will open at the theater March 7 and run for three weekends, ending with the Sunday matinee March 23.
Taylor, the theater's artistic director, will start to select the cast for "Rent" Dec. 8 in the evening and auditions will also take place at 7 p.m. Dec. 9 and 10.
The rock musical "Rent" is based on the opera "La Boheme," which tells the story of poor musicians and artists living on New York City's lower east side in "alphabet city." The show opened on Broadway in 1996 after winning the Pulitzer Prize in its off-Broadway run. The composer of "Rent," Jonathan Larson, died suddenly just before "Rent" opened off-Broadway. "Rent" won the Tony Award for Best Musicaland lasted 5,123 performances and ran for 12 years. It is the ninth longest-running show in Broadway history.
