Whether you believe in the supernatural or not - spirits roaming the earth and stories of ghostly encounters - it's hard to deny the attraction and energy of psychic medium Theresa Caputo, also known as the Long Island Medium on TLC.
Caputo will bring her show "Theresa Caputo Live! The Experience" to the Community Arts Center, 220 W. Fourth St., at 3 and 7:30 p.m. Oct. 26.
Caputo's two-hour live show is unscripted and begins with a short 10- to 15-minute speech about her gift to communicate with those who have passed away and she will give examples of how she communicates with spirits in a large setting.
Theresa Caputo, also known as the Long Island Medium, will visit Williamsport Oct. 26. Caputo’s two shows will be held at 3 and 7:30 p.m., both at the Community Arts Center, 220 W. Fourth St.
"I will stop and turn around and look someone right in the face and say, 'Who lost the nephew?' " she said. "the spirit finds them - it's incredible."
She may be able to talk to the dead, but she can't see the future, because she had no idea she would be in for the ride of her life when she started her business with only a few business cards and word of mouth.
Long Island Medium launched its fourth season this year, and Caputo is on tour with her live show and her new book, "There's More to Life Than This," was released Oct. 1. She was booked up to two years before Long Island Medium even aired.
"I thought I would do a couple episodes and go back to my life," she said.
Long Island Medium is a reality show that follows Caputo around in her normal, day-to-day life as a wife and mother of two - who also communicates with the dead.
Caputo said she cannot turn her gift off, so what would be a normal trip to the grocery store for most of us might turn into a reading for an unsuspecting shopper at the deli counter or for an employee stocking shelves.
There's no denying Caputo's spunk, as viewers can see on her show. She has no qualms about approaching complete strangers with a message from a loved one, but said sometimes she can hold back if she feels that the person is not quite ready to hear what she has to say or may not believe in her gift.
She also has one rule - the spirits only can communicate positive messages and she refuses anything negative.
Caputo chose to write her new book for her fans and because of the encouragement of her clients to do so. It tells the story of her life growing up with her gift as a child and she also shares experiences of some of those she has "read."
Caputo began to see and communicate with spirits when she was 4 years old, not realizing that hearing her name called out or seeing figures move past her was not something that others did not experience.
As a teenager, Caputo decided to block out her ability to communicate with the dead in an effort to become more "normal," but at 28, she realized what she had was an amazing gift and learned how to determine what the spirits were trying to tell her. She wanted to help others by using what she was given.
"This has nothing to do with me. It isn't about me," Caputo said. "It really is about people having the experience and knowing that there is more to life than what is here in the physical world."
Caputo said she feels incredibly blessed, knowing that she has changed someone's life by assuring them that their loved one is at peace is what makes her know it is all worth it.
A practicing medium for more than 10 years, Caputo is certified with the Forever Family Foundation, an organization dedicated to connecting science with the afterlife.
"I really feel blessed to be given this opportunity to help so many people," Caputo said. "I really do love and appreciate all of my fans and I love to have the opportunity to meet them."
