Bakers are needed for the 2013 PA Preferred Chocolate Baking contest to be held Aug. 27 at the Sullivan County Fair.
A state-sponsored agricultural marketing program, PA Preferred identifies and promotes food and agricultural products grown, produced or processed in Pennsylvania.
When residents buy local products, they not only directly support the state's economy, but also encourage Pennsylvania businesses to continue to grow and create great products that guarantee consumers fresh, quality food.
Contestants are encouraged to use as many Pennsylvania-produced ingredients as possible in their chocolate baking recipes. For a list of member locations, visit www.PAPreferred.com.
More than 100 fairs across Pennsylvania will offer cash prizes for the best PA Preferred chocolate cakes and chocolate cookies, brownies or bars (youth division).
The Sullivan County Fair's contest is a preliminary competition that leads to the selection of the final PA Preferred Chocolate Baking blue ribbon winners each January at the Pennsylvania Farm Show in Harrisburg.
First place winners at the Farm Show will be awarded a cash grand prize of $500 for the winning chocolate cake recipe and $250 for the winning chocolate cookie, brownie or bar recipe.
The Angel Food Cake contest also will be returning to the competitive exhibit lineup at the Sullivan County Fair.
The INCREDIBLE Angel Food Cake Contest will be held Aug. 27.
There are two main types of cakes, butter and foam (egg-leavened). Angel food is the classic example of a foam cake.
The cake is 100 percent fat free, and because of the eggs, is a good source of the highest quality protein, as well a source of choline, which is essential to memory and brain development.
Entrants may not have won first place in this Angel Food Cake contest at any other fair in 2013.
Prizes awarded will be first place $25 second place $15 third place $10.
The winning cake will be eligible for competition at the PA Farm Show in January 2014, where the winner will receive $500 for first prize.
All cakes entered into the contest must be made from scratch and using eggs produced in Pennsylvania. A recipe also must be submitted.
Cakes will be judged on the following categories and percentages:
30 percent - Flavor (smell, taste, flavoring).
25 percent - Inside Characteristics (texture, lightness).
20 percent - Overall Appearance (surface, size, color).
15 percent - Creativity.
