The Northern Tier Buy Fresh Buy Local chapter - a program of the Northern Tier Cultural Alliance - is pleased to announce availability of the latest regional Local Food Guide. Covering Bradford, Sullivan, Susquehanna, Tioga, Potter and Wyoming counties, the guide lists farms, wineries, dairies, restaurants and stores that have a commitment to production and sale of food grown in the region.
The full-color 16-page guide is available at the Endless Mountains Visitors Bureau (EMVB) in Tunkhannock and the Weigh Station Cafe in Towanda. Copies also will be distributed at farmers markets, libraries, restaurants and farms in the region over the next year.
Thanks to the support of advertisers and chapter members, the publication is free to all interested eaters. To get bulk copies for distribution, call Ruth Tonachel at 265-7455.
In addition to the Local Food Guide, a 2013 PA Northern Tier Regional Farmers Markets brochure also has been produced by the Northern Tier Buy Fresh Buy Local chapter. The Farmers Markets brochure covers the same counties as the Local Food Guide but also extends to list growers markets in nearby Lackawanna, Luzerne and Columbia counties and Tioga and Chemung counties in New York.
Northern Tier Buy Fresh Buy Local (NTBFBL) is a chapter of FoodRoutes Network LLC (FoodRoutes.org) a subsidiary of the Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture (PASA), the statewide coordinator.
Northern Tier is one of 13 BFBL chapters in Pennsylvania and more than 75 chapters nationwide.
The goal of this chapter is to make it easier for consumers to find, choose and appreciate local food and to support farmers and farmland retention.
Purchasing local food helps support family farms, grows our local economy, and keeps farmers in business. Local food is fresher, often produced in a more environmentally friendly and sustainable manner, and tastes better than produce transported from miles away.
Those interested in looking for a specific local food or dreaming of a local foods "road trip," these publications can serve as a guide to nutritious and delicious food and a road map to a healthier life and more vibrant, rural communities.
In addition to print copies, both of these publications can be downloaded from www.ntcu lturalalliance .org/north ern-tier-buy-fresh-buy-local/.
