How is it possible to accumulate over 400 days of unused sick leave when you've only been employed by the government entity for seven years?
Apparently that's what Dr. Kathleen Kelley did for her service to the Williamsport Area School District.
When she finally retires, she collects compensation for a maximum of 200 days in unused sick leave at the expense of the Williamsport Area School District according to the Sun-Gazette's article. Teachers in the district get paid only up to 50 unused sick days we are told. So she earns sick leave in districts other than Williamsport Area, but the taxpayers of the Williamsport Area School District get saddled with the bill according to the Sun-Gazette's article. A $40,000 bill.
The Sun-Gazette's article didn't state what she gets as a pension, which is supposedly paid through the State Employee's Retirement System. It would have been nice to know how much that was. And why should public employees get bonuses for years served on top of a pension? Dr. Kelley only served 7 years in the Williamsport Area School District. That bonus cost local taxpayers $20,000. The Williamsport Area School District Board really let the taxpayers of the district down.
