SELINSGROVE - Rebecca Frazier, of Williamsport, recently spent time in Hawaii with 11 other students from Susquehanna University as part of the university's Global Opportunities (GO) program.
GO Hawaii: A Three-Prong Approach to Understanding Hawaiian Culture gave students the opportunity to visit the Polynesian Cultural Center, 'Iolani Palace, Pearl Harbor and Volcanoes National Park; snorkel in a protected coral reef environment; learn Hawaiian traditions such as poi making, hula and the luau; and participate in service projects with native Hawaiians.
By attending cultural programs, students gained a greater understanding of the Hawaiian way of life, both past and present.
Frazier is studying neuroscience at Susquehanna, where she will be a senior in the fall. She is a 2010 graduate of Williamsport Area High School and the daughter of Chip and Brenda Frazier.
Melanie Schramm, of Cogan Station, was one of six students from Susquehanna University who recently spent time in Spain as part of the GO program.
Centered in the city of Seville, Spanish Language and Culture gives students the opportunity to stay with host families and study the Spanish language at the Center for Cross Cultural Studies.
They are immersed in all areas of the culture, including flamenco dance and Spanish cuisine. Visits to religious and historical sites such as the Cathedral of Saint Mary of the See and the Alcazar, and excursions to Cordoba and Palos de la Frontera, further round out the experience.
Schramm is studying early childhood education at Susquehanna, where she will be a junior in the fall. She is a 2011 graduate of Williamsport Area High School and the daughter of George and Joyce Schramm.
Study away is an integral part of a Susquehanna education. In addition to optional study-away arrangements, Susquehanna is distinguished by its GO program, which requires all students to spend at least two weeks off campus, immersed in a culture different from their own.
Susquehanna students can choose from study-away programs, ranging from a few weeks to as long as a full semester, in Africa, Asia, Australia, South America, Europe, New Orleans and Washington, D.C., among other options.
