I know I can't be the only person that was super excited when "Awkward" on MTV came back for its third season, which started mid April. But this season, something's different.
When we left Jenna, the star of the show, she was left with a life changing choice: choosing between hunk Matty or nice guy Jake.
Well, after a twist of events (of course), season three started with Jenna and Matty, in high school lover's bliss. And in an almost-too-perfect world, Jenna's best friend, Tamara, is now dating Jake after they spent the summer together in Europe on a school trip.
“Awkward,” which is in its third season, may be seen at 10 p.m. Tuesdays on MTV. Above, Jenna, the star of the show, is seen.
Even in the first episode, though, you can see this paradise of "BF/GF/BFF" bliss that Tamara said she was dreaming of since she was a child is crumbling. Jealousy issues for both Tamara and Matty show when Jake and Jenna still have a connection - one of those annoying, "I finish his sentences" connections.
And Tamara and Jake are still in their honeymoon phase, when everything they do together is perfect; they even share a Facebook page! Matty and Jenna have only solidified their physical relationship and Matty sees that an emotional connection is lacking between the two.
Ricky Schwartz, a character from last season has died in a freak accident involving peanuts and a terrible allergic reaction. But people aren't that sad, which to me is a bit insensitive on the show's part - making fun of a death of a teenager. Ricky and Tamara had had a fling, in which Tamara said he was the first person she thought she loved. And a lot of people just really didn't like Ricky because he was a "player."
Sadie, my girl Sadie, my FAVORITE character, Sadie, is said to be pregnant with Ricky's child because she is eating a lot and then throwing up. We find out it's stress eating and puking because her family is broke; her mother's in rehab for exhaustion and her father fled the country to rid himself of the financial problems and Sadie's alone. And she's seeking consolation in Matty. They have had a kind of undefined relationship the whole series. Sadie has perpetually tormented Jenna throughout the entire series, yet Matty doesn't ever stand up for Jenna. I foresee a Matty-Sadie hook up, and I'm totally okay with it.
Speaking of pregnancy, Jenna has her own freakout when she's convinced she's pregnant and her and her mother go through what it would be like, with mom instantly blaming herself and saying it's her fault. Jenna reassures her mother that if it happened, it was meant to be - not her fault - but in the same breath is rejoicing for the "NOT PREGNANT" result of the test.
Here's what's different. As a viewer, it is strange for me to see Jenna happy, because there is always something going wrong for her. So, it's different to see her being materialistic and infatuated with a boy because that's not the Jenna we were introduced to.
They are also throwing in a mysterious boy who seems to be artsy and very perceptive in Jenna's creative writing class, something very opposite from Matty, who sometimes tends to be a little shallow and distracted.
And, dare I say it, Jenna is a little, a teensy bit more glamorous this season. Maybe it's just me, but I feel like she's wearing make-up, which is something Jenna never did in the earlier seasons.
All the normal characters are back for this season as well. We can't forget Val, the guidance counselor, who is convinced that Sadie killed Ricky and Ming, who is hiding from the Asian mafia in her high school.
I'm hoping for the best; sometimes shows like this throw a lackluster performance in the third season and before you know it, season four is the last. So, I'm rooting for MTV to make the show a little bit more substantial in order to prove its staying power other than the witty use of hash tag talk throughout the entire show.
You can catch "Awkward" at 10 p.m. Tuesdays on MTV.
