A 22-year-old Linden man who had sex with a 14-year-old girl last September will spend at least a year in state prison.
Michael Fultz pleaded guilty to a charge of statutory sexual assault on Nov. 30. He was sentenced to one to four years in state prison by Judge Marc Lovecchio on Thursday.
At the time of the incident, Fultz had stopped taking his medication for bipolar disorder and was living on his own for the first time.
"I worry for him going to prison," Fultz's mother testified at his sentencing hearing. "He needs assistance - he has the mentality of a 14- or 15-year-old ... I fear for his life."
"The worst part (of prison) will be the first three months during classification," Lovecchio told Fultz. "You can't get caught up with the cons. There will be a whole lot of people just like you there who want to turn their lives around."
