YWCA seeks restaurants, guests for first ‘Cuisine and a Cause’

February 14, 2013
Williamsport Sun-Gazette

The YWCA Northcentral PA is looking for local chefs, caterers, restaurants and bakeries to compete in the first bi-annual "Cuisine and A Cause" from 1 to 4 p.m. April 14 at the Holiday Inn, 100 Pine Street.

A total of 200 tickets are available for the event, which is open to the public.

The head-to-head competition will allow guests to sample and vote for their favorite dish in five categories: best appetizer, best salad, best soup or chili, best entree and best dessert. Competitors can enter as many categories as they chose.

"We are very excited for 'Cuisine and A Cause,' " said committee chair, Rachel Kirk.

"Williamsport has always had great dining opportunities and with so many new restaurants opening recently, we knew this would be a great opportunity to bring people and businesses together."

There is no cost for participating businesses, who will receive a personalized poster to promote their competition in the event.

The cost to attend the event is $50 a person or $95 a couple and each ticket will include a complimentary glass of wine or beer.

"This is a great opportunity for restaurants to reach new customers and reconnect with their regulars," Anna Thompson, communication and development manager said. "We are very excited for some friendly competition and some great food."

Restaurants who already have signed up for the event represent all aspects of the community. From The Country Store - an established business known for pig roasts and butchering - to The Sunflower Cafe and Bakery, a newer business known for catering to the vegan and gluten-free lifestyle, "Cuisine and A Cause" will be an opportunity for community members to experience all of the flavors that this area has to offer.

Votes will be cast and winners will be announced during the event and framed certificates will be presented to winning businesses.

Plates and forks will be provided to participants, but they will need to provide their own heating elements, extension cords and cooking equipment. Each will be provided with their own workspace during the event.

Deadline for registration is Feb. 20. For more information, tickets or to register, please contact Thompson at 322-4637, ext. 159 or email athompson@ywcawilliamsport.org.
