JERSEY?SHORE - The Jersey Shore Branch YMCA is offering a brand new Y Art program, the first of its kind in the area.
The program came to fruition when the Y's child care director, Corinne Amrom proposed the idea to Executive Director Laura McMahon.
Amrom, an artist herself with a degree in art and education certification from Lycoming College, formulated the program.
With a generous grant from the First Community Foundation Partnership and the veteran knowledge of Deborah Leonard, the Y Art program at the Jersey Shore Branch YMCA was born.
The first course offered is drawing and painting for kids, which will begin Thursday. Leonard, who retired from the Jersey Shore Area School District after 33 years of teaching elementary art, will be the instructor.
She was the recipient of the 2008 Pennsylvania Art Education Association Outstanding Retiring Art Educator Award. During her career at Jersey Shore, she involved her students in many projects promoting the arts.
One of Leonard's main goals in teaching is to expose her students to as many different types of art and art materials as possible, giving children a well-rounded art education.
Due to the phenomenal popularity of the program's initial class, drawing and painting for kids, Leonard plans to return to lead another art class for kids following soon after its conclusion in April. Her next class will focus on sculpture, using found objects as well as new materials, which include mediums such as clay, reed, paper and more.
The Jersey Shore Y Art program also is exploring the addition of classes for teens and adults. Various courses will be offered with content ranging from classic drawing, painting and sculpture to scrap booking, fiber crafts, jewelry making and more.
However, the first step in finalizing a course for teens and adults is finding a qualified individual to instruct class participants.
The Jersey Shore YMCA is accepting applications for interested candidates with art experience.
Classes encourage those at any skill level to enroll. All Y Art programs at Jersey Shore do not require any art experience, just a passion for creating art and learning creative new ways to use different materials.
Registration will be open soon for upcoming classes. Check the Jersey Shore Branch YMCA website www.jerseyshorepaymca.org for details.
