Talk centers on heart health

LEWISBURG - Dr. Petra Lynch, a Geisinger interventional cardiologist and a member of the on-site Evangelical Community Hospital's cardiovascular care team, will discuss heart health awareness, heart disease prevention, intervention and treatment at a "Talk with the Doc" session today at the hospital.

A complimentary meal will be provided at 5:30 p.m., and the talk begins at 6:30.

February is American Heart Month. Cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 killer in the U.S., causing 2,200 deaths each day.

Susquehanna Health announces events

Susquehanna Health will hold the following events:

Glycemic index class, 3 p.m. today at the Diabetes and Nutrition Care Center, 3rd Floor, Divine Providence Hospital - The glycemic index is scientifically researched to help curb appetite and improve blood glucose levels while promoting weight loss. Participants will identify more than 15 low glycemic foods to use in personal meal planning. A referral from a physician is required prior to taking the class. The fee is determined by insurance co-pay amount. For more information, call 326-8410.

Low-cost blood screenings, 6:30 a.m. to noon Wednesday at the Medical Plaza in Montoursville, 900 Plaza Drive - Participants must consult with their physicians about which test(s) may be most beneficial for them. Cash, check or credit card payment is required at the time of service. Advance registration is required by calling 321-3210 or visiting SusquehannaHealth.org/Events.

Osteoporosis screening, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday at The LifeCenter in the Lycoming Mall, Pennsdale - A quick and painless ultrasound heel screening to measure bone density level will be offered for a fee. Call 877-883-4791 to schedule an appointment.

Nutrition facts label reading class, 5 p.m. Wednesday at Diabetes and Nutrition Center in Divine Providence Hospital - Learn simple guidelines to use when reading nutrition labels and conduct label comparisons. Guidelines will be provided for total fat, cholesterol, sodium, total carbohydrates, dietary fiber and protein. A referral from a physician is required prior to taking the class. The fee is determined by insurance co-pay amount. For more information, call 326-8410.

Blood pressure, heart rate and oxygen checks, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at The LifeCenter at Lycoming Mall. No appointment necessary.

Customized nutrition plans for healthy weight, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday - Meet with a health educator at The LifeCenter in the Lycoming Mall and receive an individualized report of the calories your body uses each day, your percent body fat and a sample daily menu of an eating plan that promotes healthy eating and a healthy weight. The plan is not appropriate for individuals with diabetes or other special dietary needs. Participants may have water, but no food or exercise is permitted for four hours prior to testing. Managing cholesterol, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at The LifeCenter - Learn about cholesterol, recommended levels, factors that cause high cholesterol and ways to manage it with lifestyle changes by scheduling a consult with a health educator. Nursing exam scheduled

The practical nursing program at the Northern Tier Career Center will administer a pre-entrance exam at 8:15 a.m. Wednesday.

Evangelical holds free screenings

LEWISBURG - Community Health Education at Evangelical Community Hospital will hold the following screenings through February:

Heart screen - 7-10 a.m. Thursday at the Community Health Education Center. Appointment required. Screenings include: lipid panel (good, bad, and total cholesterol levels, triglycerides), blood pressure, body composition, cardiac risk assessment, blood oxygen saturation, and stroke assessments. Results will be reviewed by a physician and mailed to you. A 12-hour fast is required prior to the appointment.

Free heel scan clinic - 1-3 p.m. Friday at the Community Health Education Center. You qualify if you have not had a DXA scan in the past two years, have not had a heel bone density test in the past year and meet one of the following criteria: over the age of 65, post menopausal or pre-menopausal with high risk factors. Appointments required.

Blood pressure screenings - Mondays, 9 a.m.-noon; Wednesdays, noon-4 p.m.; and Fridays, 9 a.m.-1 p.m., Community Health Education Center, Route 15.

Gala to raise funds for diabetes program

LEWISBURG - Feb. 22 is the last day to reserve tickets for the Evangelical Gala, Evangelical Community Hospital's premier fundraising event, which will be held March 9 at Larison Hall, Bucknell University. It begins with a 5:30 p.m. cocktail hour and a silent auction, followed by dinner, dancing and a live auction.

Proceeds will support an effort to establish a comprehensive diabetes care program at Evangelical Community Hospital.

Susquehanna Health plans 2nd Day of Dance

PENNSDALE - Susquehanna Health's Spirit of Women program will hold its second annual Day of Dance from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 23 at Lycoming Mall.

Women who sign up for free Spirit of Women membership may attend the dance-filled day that focuses on women's heart health. Attendees may participate in Zumba, piloxing, turbo kick and Walk Fit classes throughout the day, as well as health screenings including body mass index, blood pressure, glucose and cholesterol test, foot screen and EKG.

A healthy cooking demonstration will be held at The LifeCenter in the Bon-Ton/JC Penney wing at 11 a.m.

Susquehanna Health electrophysiologist Dr. Hanan Morcos will present "Heart Arrythmias in Women" from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in the community room.
