Steer sisters lead Penn College basketball

Through action on Sunday, Pennsylvania College of Technology winter sports teams had a combined record of four wins and three losses during the week. Last Monday's scheduled home basketball games against PSU Scranton were postponed due to weather until Feb. 10.

Women's basketball

After leading PSU Schuylkill by just three points at the intermission, 30-27, Penn College poured it on in the second half en route to a 72-48 Penn State University Athletic Conference victory on Wednesday. Jamie Steer finished with 20 points for the night while Jenna Matzinger added 14 points and 13 rebounds.

In a sister-sister act on Saturday at PSU DuBois, Jamie Steer, a freshman, scored 22 points and added 10 rebounds and her senior sister, Kristen, scored 16 in a 71-60 Penn College win. Also for the Wildcats, Mackenzie Brown scored 13 points and Matzinger added 12 points.

On the road again Sunday at PSU Fayette, Penn College fell, 90-83. Jamie Steer tied her personal and team season-high offensive effort with 33 points as the Wildcats, who dropped into second place in the PSUAC North Division with the loss, went to 6-5 in the conference and 11-9 overall. Matzinger scored 17 points for Penn College.

Earlier in the week it was announced that Jamie Steer, a freshman, was named both the PSUAC and United States Collegiate Athletic Association Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the period ending Jan. 27. Steer led the Wildcats in a 2-1 week averaging 21 points and 12.7 rebounds in the three games with two double-doubles. Penn College is ranked No. 13 in the Feb. 1 Week 10 USCAA Coaches' Poll.

Men's basketball

Thirty-six turnovers were too much to overcome on Wednesday as the Wildcats dropped a 67-50 decision to PSU Schuylkill. Scott Fenton led the Penn College offense with 14 points.

On Saturday at PSU DuBois, Penn College outscored the home team 4-2 in the closing minutes to pull out a 62-60 victory. Jesse Newman led the Penn College offense with 14 points while Nathaniel Brown added 13 as the Wildcats snapped a five-game losing streak.

Closing out the week at PSU Fayette on Sunday, the Wildcats lost, 81-57, to drop to 3-9 in the conference and 4-17 overall. Newman scored 13 points and Fenton added 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Wrestling

Ryan Hart at 133 pounds, and Tyler Myers at 157, each won by fall and four other Wildcats won by forfeit in a 36-3 win at Thaddeus Stevens on Wednesday. Hart remained undefeated with a 9-0 record and three pins while Myers improved to 17-1 with 13 falls. Overall, Penn College is 12-7 for the campaign.

In Saturday action at the Jamestown, N.Y., Community College Open, Myers went 2-1 with two pins and a one-point decision loss to finish second at 157 for Penn College. Hart, at 133, and Dan Frankenfield at 174, both placed third while Paul Crutchlow was fourth at 184. Also for the Wildcats, Austin Clark finished 1-2 at 165 while Cesar Gonzales and Tim Kuntz both went 0-2 at 149 and Alex Muller went 0-2 at 184. No team scores were kept.
