MANSFIELD - Going into Wednesday night's PSAC-East basketball game between Mansfield and Bloomsburg, both teams were looking to improve their position as far as post-season playoffs are concerned.
Following the game, Bloomsburg took one big step toward reaching the playoff goal, while Mansfield was kept looking as the Huskies defeated the Mountaineers 82-81 in double overtime.
"I don't think I am doing a very good job right now and we aren't doing a very good job as a team," said a disappointed MU head coach Rich Miller. "We are searching for answers right now and we have to find them and we have to find them quick. We have ten games left and there is no room for error. Everyone is good, we are telling our guys that and they are finding that to be the case."
The Mounties came out smoking as they drained three treys for a quick 9-0 lead, two by Kenny Johnson and one by Charles Becoats.
The Huskies accepted the Mountaineer challenge as they crept back into the game until they took their first lead of the game at 15-14 with 8:32 on the clock.
From that point on, the two teams exchanged blows until the Mounties regained the lead at 19-17.
From there, Mansfield put together a 12-5 run to go up 31-22 with three minutes left in the opening period before Bloom answered the Mountie run with a 10-3 effort of its own to cut the MU lead to a pair (34-32) at halftime.
Mansfield led by as many as five coming out of the break, but the Huskies kept chipping away until they tied the game at 43-all. For the rest of regulation, it was about as close as it could have possibly been as the game showed four ties and eight lead changes until the game was deadlocked at 68-all and the two teams headed for overtime.
In the first overtime, Mansfield led by as many as four, but couldn't hold off the Huskies who tied the game at 75-all to send to the game to the second extra period.
In the second extra period, Jimel Calliste was the man of the hour as he scored four of the Huskies seven points including an off-balance, driving layup with 5.4 second left.
The Mountaineers did get off one last ditch shot, but Chuck Harper's shot bounced off the rim, fell harmlessly to the floor and with that, the victory belonged to the Huskies.
