A felony theft charge and 12 additional counts of bad checks were lodged this week against Eldred Township resident Logan K. Hampton.
In a two-page affidavit, city police accuse Hampton, 22, of 170 Pinecrest Drive, with writing 12 bad checks that totaled $5,708 between mid-October and late November.
Police said he wrote bad checks to a half a dozen plumbing supply companies to purchase copper, which he sold "for market value" at recycling businesses.
Police said he purchased more than $1,000 of worth batteries from one business with bad checks and then returned the batteries to get cash that he claimed he needed "to pay his rent since he had recently" been terminated from his job.
Following his arraignment Monday night before District Judge Jon E. Kemp, he was released on $20,000 bail.
