Lyco men win a mismatch

December 30, 2012

Don't be fooled by the time off.

The Lycoming men showed little effects from the holiday break, and opened the first round of the Louis Flemming Basinger Memorial Tournament with two crowd pleasing dunks.

The momentum from the dunks carried Lycoming through the first 10 minutes. The Warriors built a 31-7 advantage over Crain, which was severely out-manned after Seth Heinicke was scratched due to an injury.

Lycoming had four players in double figures en route to a 103-27 win at Lamade Gymnasium. It was the largest all-time margin of victory for Lycoming.

"It was just a difficult game for them, and a difficult game for us," Lycoming coach Guy Rancourt said. "We wanted to make sure we were respecting both sides while still playing hard."

At one point Lycoming scored 23 unanswered points in the first half while building a 36-7 lead. Kevin Anthony, who slammed home Lycoming's first four points, led the first-half charge with 10 points through the first 10 minutes.

Anthony finished with 12 first half points and Ihsaan Davis chipped in 10 off the bench as Lycoming ended the half up 57-13.

The Warriors outscored the Highlanders 32-8 in the paint, 21-0 on points off turnovers, 20-0 on fastbreak points and 32-2 on points from the bench.

As the game progressed it only got worse for Cairn.

Lycoming pulled its starters before the start of the second half, but that didn't help Cairn's shooters. The Highlanders made only 10 of their 59 shots and were outscored by Lycoming's bench 68-9.

"We wanted to identify weakness in ourselves that we've seen over the last 10 games," Rancourt said. "We tried to address those weaknesses in the second half of the game."

In limited minutes, though, Lycoming's core group of players put on a show for the crowd. Jerald Williams tallied 14 assists, Anthony finished with 12 points and Ihsaan Davis added 19 off the bench.
