Chinese educator to teach multicultural art classes

MANSFIELD - Chinese artist and educator Zhang Xiaojuan will spend the spring 2013 semester at Mansfield University as visiting international scholar.

Xiaojuan will teach Multicultural Crafts (ART 2238), as well as a class on branding and identity. She also will be involved in several other multicultural and social activities on campus and in the community during her stay. Xiaojuan is an assistant professor at Shandong University of Art and Design in China, where she has taught for nine years.

"In my opinion, visual design should make a relevance to social events; that can further the advancing in other fields under its interdisciplinary context, such as economic, social, technological and environmental disciplines," Xiaojuan says of her work.

Multicultural Crafts (ART 2238) will meet Mondays and Wednesdays, from 4 to 6:30 p.m.

"Projects will span ancient history through contemporary time. It is open to anyone who is interested, students and community members," Michelle Schlegel, associate professor of graphic design, said.
