Greater Lycoming Habitat kicks off its annual appeal

December 16, 2012
Williamsport Sun-Gazette

"The letters are out and we feel very good about this year's campaign," said Bob Hickox, executive director of Greater Lycoming Habitat for Humanity. "We are in the midst of the philanthropic giving season. Although the economy has not been great, this is the time of year when many of us focus on our personal giving. There are 15 days left to make a charitable gift donation that is deductible on next year's return. We know that with this community's continued support we will meet our goal of raising $160,000."

At Greater Lycoming Habitat for Humanity, the vision is to have a community in which everyone has a decent place to live. The staff call it putting faith into action.

Habitat for Humanity partners with families in need to own decent, affordable homes. Habitat homes are rehabilitated or built primarily with volunteers using money contributed by supporters.

First, these families have to go through a selection process that includes income verification, seeing if they are credit worthy and financially responsible. Families who qualify for Habitat homes pay their mortgage back over a 30-year period with no interest. They also are required to work 250 hours for each adult in the household as sweat equity, with 100 hours working on their own home.

"Every little bit helps. Our donors and volunteers know how important their contributions are for Habitat for Humanity to continue its work. We appreciate their hard work and the support they have shown over the years," said Ana White, home development coordinator for Habitat for Humanity.

Proceeds from the Habitat for Humanity campaign go to build homes for hardworking, deserving families with a real need who work with volunteers not only to build homes, but to build strong relationships and give back to the community they live in.

This year's appeal runs through January.
