Blaze Buckwalter remembers the start to his junior season quite well. He was still battling the lingering effects of an injury and knew he wasn't at his best.
The first couple weeks were a struggle.
So now, as a senior, to get the start to his season like he did Saturday by winning the 195-pound title at the Top Hat, well that's a little better way to start his season. Throw in the fact he beat returning PIAA Class AAA sixth-place finisher Aaron Varner in the finals and there was an even better reason for that permanent smile splattered across Buckwalter's face at the Magic Dome.

He was one of three local champions last night, joining Williamsport's Roshaun Cooley (113 pounds) and Hughesville's Kyle Barnes (152). Jersey Shore's Noah Ulmer (106) and Zak Herman, South Williamsport's Andrew Gipe (126), Muncy's Troy Hembury (182) and Central Mountain's Caleb Stover (285) all earned runner-up finishes.
Central Columbia, in its first trip to the Top Hat, won the team title with 163.5 points despite not having a champion. Central Mountain, the two-time defending champions, finished second with 150 points. Clearfield's Christian Stone was named the tournament's Outstanding Wrestler after capturing the 138-pound title with four wins by fall.
In one of the most anticipated finals matchups of the night, Hembury, a returning Class AA fourth-place finisher, dropped a 2-1 decision to Bald Eagle Area's Jacob Taylor, a returning Class AAA third-place finisher. The match was tied 1-1 late in the third period when Hembury was assessed a penalty point for an illegal hold against Taylor. Despite objections from Muncy coach Denny Harer, the call stood and Hembury dropped a 2-1 decision.
"It was a questionable call and I was surprised they gave him the point," Hembury said. "But I don't think I'm 100 percent yet with my knee, so it's nice to see I'm at a high level."
Buckwalter is coming off a disappointing end to his junior season when he qualified for the PIAA Class AAA tournament but failed to place. He said his title last night, and especially his win over Bald Eagle Area's Varner, were proof enough he's on the right track.
"It feels good to get rolling," Buckwalter said. "I'm feeling good right away so I can get going and don't have to play catch-up."
Varner was one of eight returning state qualifiers or state placewinners to lose during the course of the Top Hat this weekend. And Buckwalter made sure he was one of them in dominant fashion. Buckwalter won his 195-pound final, 11-2.
Buckwalter got the bout started with a four-point move that created a hole not even Varner could dig out of. And for Buckwalter, it gave him just the confidence he needed.
"I was just trying to defend his shots and work in mine and it just so happened that I hit a big move," Buckwalter said. "It helped me feel comfortable."
Buckwalter spent the final 5 minutes of the match strengthening his lead. He knew well of Varner's pedigree and four points may not be enough to win.
"You never want to play it safe and let him do his stuff," Buckwalter said. "You have to keep your attack going and keep the pressure on."
His 11 points in the finals were second-most behind only Tri-Valley's Ty Schoffstall who won the 160-pound championship with a 19-4 technical fall over Titusville's Ehrin Lee.
"I'm always confident in my abilities, but this is definitely a step in the right direction," Buckwalter said.
Barnes can relate to what Buckwalter is going through and what he's striving for. It was only a year ago the Hughesville senior was trying to make a name for himself at the Top Hat in an absolutely loaded 145-pound weight class.
The returning state runner-up won a 145-pound weight class a year which featured state placewinner David Batkowski of Montoursville and state qualifiers Blake Bowman of Tri-Valley and Nolan Barger of Clearfield. Bowman and Barger were both back in the 152-pound field to face Barnes, but only one of them would see him in the final.
Barnes beat Barger for a second consecutive year in the final, this time 5-2, to win his second consecutive Top Hat title. This win was far different from last year's 11-2 win over Barger for Barnes in which the senior did as he pleased offensively.
Barger made Barnes work, fighting through a number of scrambles to score points.
"I'm down for a match like that no matter what time of the year," Barnes said. "We created less opportunities for each other to score (than last year). It was a lot more physical. I think he wanted revenge. He came after me with a little chip on his shoulder and that made for an exciting match to watch."
Barnes was the top seed in the 152-pound bracket, a far cry from last year when he came into the Top Hat looking to prove himself on a state-caliber level. He saw Bowman and Barger both on the other side of the bracket and knew he was eventually going to be in for a dogfight.
But he was looking forward to it.
"This is definitely a good things at the beginning of the year to knock some dust off," Barnes said. "When you're one of the top kids, you want that match, and I feel like I'm one of the to kids."
Cooley picked up his first Top Hat title, and just the second tournament title of his varsity career winning the 113-pound bracket last night. The sophomore 113-pounder said he entered the tournament with an open mind. He didn't have visions of winning or being named the Outstanding Wrestler floating through his head,
After a fourth-place finish a year ago, Cooley just wanted to come in and wrestle well. In the finals against Central Columbia's Taylor Johnson, Cooley found himself in scramble after scramble, but he always seems to find a way to come out on the positive side of that scramble,
"Normally I just scramble and hope for the best," said Cooley, with a bit of a sly smile. "I didn't try to put too much pressure on myself. I know I worked hard all summer and I did a lot of offseason wrestling in Freestyle and Greco. That helped get a lot of good competition and with my confidence and how to just be in good position."
Cooley was excited with his 113-pound title. He became the Millionaires' first Top Hat champion since Tim Maeshack beat Central Mountain's Zach Corl to win the 285-pound title in 2010.
But even after a win he was quick to point out there's still plenty to work on.
"There were a lot of mistakes made that shouldn't have been made," Cooley said. "There was stuff I should have capitalized on. I got a lot of work to do to get to states."
