During a light week due to the Thanksgiving holiday, Pennsylvania College of Technology men's and women's basketball teams split in their only games while the wrestling team was idle. This Wednesday the basketball teams begin Penn State University Athletic Conference play when they host PSU Hazleton at 6 p.m. (women) and 8 p.m. (men).
Boosted by a 27-point performance from Scott Fenton and 22 points from Jesse Newman the Wildcats recorded their first win of the season, 61-53, over Alfred, N.Y., University on Tuesday. Penn College, now 1-3 overall, held a 45-24 rebound advantage in the game.
Senior Kierstin Steer scored 13 points Tuesday in a 94-64 loss to Alfred, N.Y., University and in doing so became the first women's 1,000-point career scorer in Penn College history. Steer's younger sister, Jamie, a freshman, led the team in scoring against Alfred with 14 points while Mackenzie Brown added 12 points, 10 rebounds and six blocked shots.
After a 2-1 opening week that included an 84-66 win over Central Penn College, the Wildcats were ranked No. 8 in the first United States Collegiate Athletic Association Coaches' Poll, for the period Nov. 7-14. Central Penn was ranked No. 1 in the poll prior to the two teams playing. In the Division II Power Ratings, Penn College is No. 7. This is the first season that the USCAA has split into two divisions for women's basketball. The division includes 39 teams.
