Local roundup: Penn State's Lawson wins Mat Town title

November 25, 2012
Williamsport Sun-Gazette

Lock Haven's Cody Wheeler and Harry Turner took second at 133 and 285 pounds, respectively, leading Lock Haven at the seventh annual Mat Town Open.

The Bald Eagles showed their depth at 157 pounds as Jake Kemerer and Aaron Fry took fourth and sixth, respectively. Turner, ranked No. 30 at 285, won 7-0, 6-0 and 5-3 before falling to Penn State's James Lawson, 4-1 in the finals.

Lawson was the lone Nittany Lion competing. The sophomore began the day with two wins over unattached non-collegiate wrestlers (meaning the results do not count towards his official record). Lawson posted a first period pin (1:11) and a quick tech fall in those two bouts. He then downed Penn's Steven Graziano 5-1 in the semifinals before beating Turner.

Will Regan scored 15 points and Javon McCrea added 14 as Buffalo defeated Mansfield, 76-57, in men's college basketball.

The Bulls (2-5) closed out the first half on a 25-4 run, breaking open a tight game that was tied at 25 at the 8:55 mark.

The Mountaineers (1-1) could get no closer than 18 in the second half.

Buffalo had a 37-26 rebounding advantage and scored 26 points off 15 Mansfield turnovers. The Bulls shot 56.8 percent in the first half (21 of 37), but cooled off to 36 percent in the second (9 of 25).

Joe Bell led the Mountaineers with 13 points and Charles Becoats and Chuck Harper had 10 apiece.
