Wonderful reminder

November 12, 2012
Williamsport Sun-Gazette

As a native of Williamsport who returns several times each year to visit family and friends, I always leave with the good intention of thanking various local businesses who make returning so delightful.

Being able to return and feel like the good things are still there is not just comforting but a wonderful reminder of what is good and right in the world.

I read a letter to the editor recently bemoaning the lack of a Barnes & Noble in Williamsport. Having had the good fortune of growing up in Williamsport, then living in a couple of small to mid-size towns in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia and coastal Connecticut and, for the last 12 years, in the Virginia suburbs of DC, the five-hour drive home passes quickly knowing I will be getting a tip on a good book at Otto's Book Store, a sub at Ed's Market and sticky buns at Roy's Bakery!

I spent quite a bit of time in Harder's as a young person, wore clothes mostly from David's, consumed way too many milk shakes at Stan's and ate groceries ordered over the phone and delivered by Updegraf's Store.

Those are all gone. Thank you Otto's, Roy's, Ed's, Fink's, Winner's and Henry's and all similar businesses that make Williamsport a great place to call home!
