Barton is the author of the teen fantasy book, "Fiona Thorn and the Carapacem Spell."
She has a bachelor's degree in English and philosophy from Millersville University.
At stake in America's Next Author, the writing world's version of "American Idol," is a grand prize of $5,000. The new contest allows writers to submit one short story and have readers all over the Internet vote for their favorite.
From Oct. 9 to Nov. 27, readers will have access to authors' stories and bio pages. Authors can influence voting by garnering support through social media, traditional media and enhancing their bio pages, not to mention having a great story.
