During recent meetings of the Friends of the James V. Brown Library, several events were planned.
The first will be the annual fall book sale, which will be held from Thursday through Sunday at Pine Street United Methodist Church, 441 Pine St.
The sale includes used books donated by the general public, as well as books that are culled from the library shelves due to duplication and lagging circulation.
There is a separate room dedicated to children's books and media (DVDs, CDs and VHS cassettes). The books are sorted and tabled by genre so that browsers can concentrate on their favorite authors and topics.
Thursday is "Preview Night" for members of the Friends of the Library. This gives members a first chance at the best books.
Memberships are available at the door. A membership also gives one eligibility to monthly sale categories in the Friends Favorites Book Store in the library. The preview night is from 5 to 8 p.m.
Hours for the general public to browse and find literary treasures are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
Books are sold by the bag or by the book. Children's books are priced to sell at a better bargain by the book. Saturday features special lower prices for the day.
Proceeds from the sales, memberships and book store all go to help fund library programs for children, youth and adults, and for a variety of needs from the purchase of books and equipment to guest speakers and entertainers.
In other business, the Friends Board of Directors voted to donate $7,500 to the library to use toward the annual Author Gala on Sept. 27.
The funding for this was taken from the proceeds of the Friends Favorites Gently Used Book Store and will be used to fund Adriana Trigiani's visit.
The board also set Oct. 5 as the first Book Review Luncheon, which will feature former Friends President Eve Archer.
The annual volunteer appreciation will be held from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Nov. 7. The annual meeting for the Friends will be held Dec. 4, and will include election of officers.
