Fresh food and preserving expert and author Daniel Gasteiger will visit the James V. Brown Library from 1 to 3 p.m. Sept. 15 for a presentation and book signing for his book, "Yes You Can! And Freeze and Dry It, Too," in the Lowry Room on the third floor of the Welch Family Wing.
"Yes, You Can!" is a lavishly illustrated book with step-by-step instructions in home preserving.
This lively presentation explores the reasons people preserve produce, examines several of the most popular methods of preserving, and reveals advantages and disadvantages of each.
Gasteiger grows and preserves gallons of produce each year and blogs about it online at Your Small Kitchen Garden.
He also teaches social and mobile marketing to gardeners, writers and industry.
Gasteiger became a garden writer somewhat by accident. Starting Your Small Kitchen Garden blog as an assignment for a course in Internet marketing, he launched the blog on day three or four of the class and the next morning it ranked in the No. 1 of Google's search results.
The blog draws about 14,000 monthly visitors from around the world. Through blogging and working extensively with social media such as Twitter, he landed a book contract within a year.
Gasteiger writes about gardening, cooking and preserving produce on several blogs, but his premier website is smallkitchengarden.net.
He also speaks at writers' conferences to help aspiring writers break into the industry by leapfrogging over established professionals.
Gasteiger will be featured Sept. 8 at the James V. Brown Library stand on Pine Street near the Farmer's Market from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to chat with visitors and promote his presentation and book signing at the library. The event is free and open to the public.
