The Community Theatre, 100 W. Third St., will present a dark, campy comedy, "Little Shop of Horrors," in late October and will hold open auditions at 7 p.m. Sunday and Monday.
A down-and out skid row floral assistant becomes an overnight sensation when he discovers an exotic plant with a mysterious craving for fresh blood.
Soon "Audrey II" grows into an ill-tempered, foul-mouthed, R&B-singing carnivore who offers him fame and fortune in exchange for feeding its growing appetite, finally revealing itself to be an alien creature poised for global domination.
Directed by Marie Fox and music directed by Jacquie Engel, the show requires adults ages 17 and up to fill the quirky roles.
Characters include Seymour, an insecure, sweet and awkward florist's clerk; Audrey, an attractive and honest girl with low self-esteem; Mr. Mushnik, a Jackie Mason-type florist; Orin Scrivello DDS, an egotistical, insensitive, and abusive boyfriend of Audrey's; Audrey II, the voice of the plant who's street-smart, funky and conniving; and three doo-wopping female street urchins named Crystal, Ronnette, and Chiffon. The cast is rounded out by several equally colorful ensemble members.
Those auditioning should prepare a song and bring sheet music for the accompanist or a background track CD. Anyone interested in helping backstage or in pre-production areas should attend the auditions as well.
Full character descriptions and show information is available on the CTL website, www.ctlshows.com, or by contacting the theatre at 327-1777, weekdays 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
