FORKSVILLE - The Angel Food Cake Contest is returning to the competitive exhibit lineup at the Sullivan County Fair this year.
The Incredible Angel Food Cake Contest, sponsored by the Pennsylvania Egg Farmers and the Pennsylvania State Association of County Fairs, will be held Aug. 28.
Baking a cake is a very rewarding area of home cookery. There are two main types of cakes, butter and foam (egg-leavened). Angel food is the classic example of a foam cake. The cake is 100 percent fat free, and because of the eggs, is a good source of the highest quality protein, as well a source of choline, which is essential to memory and brain development.
Entrants may not have won first place in this Angel Food Cake Contest at any other fair in 2012.
The winning cake will be eligible for competition at the Pennsylvania Farm Show in January, where the winner will receive $500 for first prize.
Those who enter a cake, which must be made from scratch and using eggs produced in Pennsylvania, also must submit the recipe.
Cakes will be judged on overall appearance (surface, size, color); inside characteristics (texture, lightness); flavor (smell, taste, flavoring); creativity; and topping, icing or decoration.
Entry forms and premium books are available at the Sullivan County Extension Office and the Sullivan County Library in Dushore. Entry forms must be submitted by Aug. 24. Also during the fair, the Pennsylvania Preferred Chocolate Baking contest to be held Aug. 28 at the Sullivan County Fair. The contest is co-sponsored by the state Department of Agriculture's PA Preferred program and the Pennsylvania State Association of County Fairs.
Contestants are encouraged to use as many Pennsylvania-produced ingredients as possible in their chocolate baking recipes. For a list of member locations, visit www.PAPreferred.com.
The Sullivan County Fair starts Aug. 29 and continues through Sept. 3.
