The most glaring error in Mr. Gould's "I am my brother's keeper" letter to the editor is the fact that Jesus never referred to anyone as being their "brother's keeper." It is a gross mischaracterization of a quote from Cain in a rather sarcastic response to God asking him where Abel was after Cain had murdered him (Gen 4:8-10).
This biblical quote has recently been adopted by some in politics when they want to justify certain social programs. It is doubly wrong to ascribe it to Jesus. I'm sure Mr. Gould is not aware of these facts.
On another note, if this is the litmus test Mr. Gould feels should be applied to government spending, in quoting is he not espousing that the U.S. government become a theocracy?
