New senior home care company opens

May 16, 2012
Williamsport Sun-Gazette

LEWISBURG - Visiting Angels, one of the nation's fastest growing providers of assisted living services for seniors, has opened its newest franchise in Lewisburg.

The new location, owned and operated by Robin and Daniel Miller of Lewisburg, provides non-medical senior homecare to help the elderly continue to live in their homes.

Visiting Angels is at 4650 Westbranch Highway and will serve a large area including Williamsport, Danville, Mifflinburg, Selinsgrove, Sunbury and Middleburg.

Daniel Miller, who moved to Lewisburg in 2009, has owned and operated automotive businesses for more than 30 years. He learned about Visiting Angels while exploring opportunities to open a new business in Lewisburg. His research showed that a rapidly aging population, coupled with the rising costs of nursing home care and depleted retirement funds, has created an urgent need for in-home elderly care.

"According to the Administration on Aging, Pennsylvania is third in the nation with 20 percent of its population over the age of 60. Only Florida and West Virginia have a higher percentage of elderly," Miller said. "At the same time, working families have less time to spend caring for their aging parents, which has created a real crisis in America. Visiting Angels solves that problem by providing non-medical senior care in the home - of either the elderly client or the family who cares for the parent. In that respect, we do serve as angels, helping with basic chores, personal hygiene, meal preparation, shopping, companionship, dementia care and providing respite for family care givers."

Nationwide, there are more than 450 Visiting Angel franchises, with more to open during 2012.

"I was attracted to the business by the opportunity to do something good for others, and by the memory of my mother constantly asking when could she go home, when we had placed her in a nursing home several years ago," Miller said. "The franchisor has been a wonderful source of training and support, providing lots of ideas, marketing programs, as well as information about how to best serve our clients, many of whom are facing difficult personal issues. Our job is to lessen their burden, give their families peace of mind, and provide a way to let mom or dad continue to live in the home they have grown to love over the years."

Founded in 1998, and based in Havertown, Visiting Angels is the nation's fastest growing franchisor of at-home assisted living services for seniors.
