Krezmer wins javelin with career-best throw

April 28, 2012
By JAKE FELIX (jfelix@sungazette.com) , Williamsport Sun-Gazette

LOCK HAVEN - Montoursville's Matt Krezmer stood on the artificial runway at Lock Haven University on Saturday at the Lock Haven High School Classic already knowing he had won the boys javelin. The junior, who spent the majority of the week easing off of practice and resting his arm, however, wanted more.

His personal best entering yesterday was 184 feet, 8 inches, but he had an eye on 185 feet each time he took the runway.

His first five throws went farther than the state-qualifying standard of 176 feet and so did his last, but this one felt a little different. The junior put behind the javelin the added speed and muscle he obtained while training for football this winter and reached a near-perfect trajectory and speed with his final attempt. When it finally met its landing point, Krezmer had thrown the javelin farther than any time in his three-year career. It reached 187 feet - 2 feet better than his goal.

"I knew I already had first place, so I just really wanted to chuck one out there and get a good one," said Krezmer. "It just felt good to get past 185 because that is a big goal and a milestone for us."

The throw was far from an aberration. Krezmer had reached the distance in practice and four of his attempts yesterday went 180 feet or better.

"It felt really good because either I throw it too low and hard or too high and not hard enough," said Krezmer. "I knew I really chucked it out there."

Krezmer defeated a talented field that included Selinsgrove's Eric Eaton (2nd), Lewisburg's Brandon Smith (3rd) and Cam Cassels (7th), Milton's Josh Brown (5th) and J.T. Fogelman (8th) and Jersey Shore's Tyler Kachelries (4th), who beat Krezmer at the Selinsgrove Classic earlier this season.

"My throw felt good because I wanted to beat Kachelries because he and I always go back-and-forth," said Krezmer, who is still 8 feet shy of the Montoursville school record. "It felt good to have 187 because I knew it was Kachelries' PR and it's always fun to battle against him."

Selinsgrove's Eric Eaton threw 181-7, over 5 feet behind Krezmer - who was wary of the Selinsgrove senior until his final throw.

"He had a big throw that scared me and I thought, geez he could come out here with another big one and tie me," said Krezmer.

Williamsport's Rachel Fatherly concluded a busy week with first-place finishes and meet-record distances in the shot put and discus as she won her first titles at the Lock Haven High School Classic.

Fatherly threw the shot put 45-3 , which beat the 2010 record of 43-10 , and in the discus she threw 132-2, which past Lewisburg's Becky Rautzhan's record of 128-3 that stood since 2005.

"I just really had to focus because I was tired and I had to put it together so I could perform," said Fatherly, who had a dual meet at Lewisburg Tuesday, traveled to the Penn Relays in Philadelphia on Thursday and Lock Haven yesterday.

The Williamsport boys, who won the team title with 95 points, had another eye-opening day on the track, beginning with the 400-meter relay team of Devon Fisher, Caleb Belle, Devin Miller and DeAndre Kaough that set a new meet record of 43.67. Milton, which finished second to the Millionaires yesterday and won this event last year, held the previous record at 44.01 set in 2009.

Williamsport's 3,200-meter relay team of Brandon Fedoriw, Joe Joncas, Gregory Johnson and Herb Stelly put a disappointing day behind them from Tuesday by setting a new season-best. The Millionaires quartet, which lost to Lewisburg in an important dual meet on Tuesday, defeated the Green Dragons and Milton yesterday.

Stelly, Williamsport's anchor, received the baton with a comfortable lead and he maintained it with a sub-2-minute split before crossing the line in 8:13.28 - nearly 7 seconds quicker than the Millionaires' winning time at last Friday's Bald Eagle Invitational.

Milton and Lewisburg also clocked season-best times, but couldn't match the Millionaires. The Black Panthers finished in 8:17.91 and Lewisburg in 8:20.17.

The Millionaires nearly swept the relays but Montoursville, which finished tied for third in the team race with Selinsgrove, rallied to win the 1,600-meter relay by 0.18 seconds.

Williamsport's Wes Cuozzo took advantage of a slip by Central Cambria's MattPride on the last hurdle and stretched out for a win in 15.78 seconds in the 110 high hurdles. He came back and won the 300 hurdles, too, beating Selinsgrove's Mike Ede. Cuozzo ran 40.45 and Ede 41.24. Montoursville's Teri Stoner gave Lycoming County a sweep in the high hurdles, beating Bloomsburg's Christina Gulliver. Stoner, who ended the soccer season with a stress fracture in her back, crossed in a career-best 15.68 seconds and was the lone hurdler to break 16 seconds. It was the first time this season she ran under 16.

"It was really exciting and I'm thankful to be out here doing it and doing it with two of my awesome teammates (Abby Lazorka and McKenzie Ruffing) that made it to the finals, too," said Stoner, who placed eighth in the 300 hurdles and was part of the second-place 400-meter relay team. "It's really a great experience."

Stoner's performance helped the Warriors win the team title with 116 points. Bloomsburg was second with 66.

The Lewisburg girls, third in the team race, won the opening 3,200-meter relay, holding off defending Class AA champion Montoursville, 9:39.43 to 9:44.70. Jenna Farmer, a freshman, and Lana Spitler traded the lead over the final two laps at least on three occasions before Farmer pulled away over the final 100 meters, shaving nearly 13 seconds off the Green Dragons best time of the season.

Other local winners included Central Mountain's Austen Randecker (long jump, 21-5 ), Milton's Jevin Tryon (800, 2:02.46) and Vicki Soltys (pole vault, 10-6), Warrior Run's Steph Shamburg (javelin, 116-0) and Hughesville's Cassidy Merrifield (100, 13.19).

Merrifield, who ran in Lane 6, was prepared to settle for second when the announcer inadvertently called Montoursville's Leah Winner, who was in Lane 4, the winner and even offered Winner a congratulatory hug before the correction came seconds later.

"We all had pretty slow times for sprints, but a first is a first," said Merrifield, who reached the PIAA Championships in the 100 twice before and plans to run track next fall at St. Francis (Pa.). "That is what is important and hopefully it will get better for districts and states."
