Mr., Mrs. Walter Barnes observe 50th anniversary

Mr. and Mrs. Walter Barnes, Lawrenceville, observed their 50th wedding anniversary Sept. 16, 2011.

They were married by the Rev. Clarence Knight, grandfather of the bride, with the Rev. Vernon Vanness assisting at West Jackson Baptist Church, Millerton, where the couple are members.

Mrs. Barnes, the former Shirley Knight, is a native of Elmira, N.Y. She is the daughter of the late Irene and Lewis Knight. She graduated from Williamson High School, Tioga, in 1955 and the Jean Summers Business School, Elmira, in 1956. She was employed for nine years as a secretary at the New York Telephone Co., Elmira, before becoming a homemaker.

Mr. Barnes, a native of Endicott, N.Y., is the son of the late Winifred and Girden Barnes. He graduated from Vestal High School, Vestal, N.Y., in 1956, and State University of New York at Cobbleskill in 1958. He served in the Army from 1961 to 1963, stationed in Germany and France. He is a self-employed farmer, leased truck driver, and sells and installs milking equipment and farm machinery. He served as a Tioga County Commissioner in Wellsboro from 1992 to 2003.

They are the parents of three sons, James, John and Jeff, all of Lawrenceville. There are four grandchildren.

In honor of their anniversary, a party and open house, hosted by their children, was held Sept. 17 in the Millerton United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall.
