Montgomery students offer plan for Old Mill Corridor

MONTGOMERY - Students representing the Youth Ambassador program presented a proposed plan to the Montgomery Borough Council Tuesday night for the Old Mill Corridor project.

The program came about through a partnership between the Lycoming County Planning Commission and the Williamsport-Lycoming Chamber of Commerce.

Seventeen students from the borough's high school were part of the project that merged all of the students' ideas into one project.

Among businesses and buildings found in the students' final design, there is a strip mall, housing units, an office building, dog park and a trail that wraps around the landscape, industries, a career training facility, a recreation center and a buffer to separate the recreation center and the industries, according to Matt Reinhart, one of the students.

A basketball court, tennis court and arcade are among some things that would be in the recreation center, according to Reinhart.

The building of the recreation center is in a flood area and is raised above ground, allowing for parking underneath the building. The raised building will help prevent damage in the event of a flood in the area, according to Reinhart.

Although the plan will take time, the students' plan is possible, according to Rachelle Ricotta, community development coordinator with the Lycoming County Planning Commission.

Small things can be done over the next one to two years, Ricotta said.

The plan is in the hands of the council now.

"It is part of the consideration on how to remediate the property. We are in the planning stages right now. The students' plans will be taken into consideration when we are ready to remediate the property," said council president Lynn Crist.

In other matters, Dale Winder, Richard Thomas and Alan Horn were named to the Planning Commission. Fred Pfeiffer was named the new Zoning Hearing Board member.

The borough still is in talks with Muncy about sewer regionalization, although both are looking into other options.

The next borough meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. March 8 at the borough office.
