The Wellsboro boys basketball team captured its first Northern Tier League-West championship since 1999, edging Mansfield 52-47 in a hard-fought title game Friday night in Elkland. The Green Hornets (19-4, 14-1) and Mansfield (18-5, 13-2) finished the regular season tied for first place, necessitating the playoff.

"It was a total team effort," Wellsboro coach Steve Adams said.

The game was tied 40-40 with three minutes remaining before the senior-laden Hornets forced some key turnovers and made a game-ending 12-7 run. Wellsboro built a seven-point first-quarter lead and had three players score in double figures, including Cameron Jones (15). Luke Berguson scored a game-high 19 points for Mansfield.

In girls basketball, Jersey Shore closed out its season with a nice win, rallying from a first-quarter deficit, then holding off Montoursville for a 54-50 victory. Vanessa Martin, Tanya Siford and Julie Stevenson scored in double figures for the Bulldogs while Tesa McKibben and Hannah Bohr combined for 32 points for Montoursville.

Katie Lisi played outstanding defense on Millville leading scorer Amber Ortman, holding her to only 13 points while Jolene Hiller played a strong all-around game and scored 13 points on Senior Night as St. John Neumann defeated Millville, 47-40. Eight seniors were honored before the game and three of them scored in double figures as Neumann (13-9) eliminated Millville from postseason contention.

South Williamsport completed a perfect season in the Heartland-III as it defeated Montgomery, 59-35. Jessica Hohman scored a game-high 18 points for the Mounties (21-1, 14-0) while Casey Drick had 16 for Montgomery.

Keely Henninger and Marisa Stetts combined for 19 rebounds and 18 points while Sami Lane scored 17 points as Loyalsock went on the road and defeated Central Columbia, 48-38. The Lancers (16-5) held Central to 19 points in the first three quarters.

Jenny Meslener grabbed 14 rebounds and Emily Lesher scored 15 points but Lewisburg lost 47-33 at Mount Carmel as the Red Tornadoes clinched a District 4 Class AA playoff berth.

Reilly Gavitt (19) and Carissa Meyer (16) combined for 35 points as Sullivan County defeated Bloomsburg, 49-28 and ended its season on a two-game winning streak.

Southern raced out to an 18-point halftime lead and Hughesville finished its season with a 56-44 loss. Megan Arthur finished with 15 points for the Spartans.

Danville attempted 45 foul shots, making 31, in a 57-48 win over Warrior Run.

The Penn College women's basketball team clinched a home playoff game in the PSU-AC playoffs, going on the road and defeating PSU-Fayette, 71-64. Four Wildcats scored in double figures, including Megan Morris who just missed a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds. Montoursville's Erica Logan scored a team-high 21 points.

Leroy Joiner scored 24 points, grabbed 19 rebounds, dealt six assists and hit 11 of 17 shots while helping Penn College rally for an 86-70 win at PSU-Fayette. The Wildcats (14-9, 12-3) trailed by 10 at halftime but switched to a 1-3-1 defense, went on a big run to start the second half and outscored Fayette, 49-23 the rest of the way.

Chris Coleman blasted a two-run home run and Chris Miller went 3-for-3 with three RBI to lead Mansfield to a 7-4 win in the nightcap of a season opening baseball doubleheader at Concord University. Concord won the opener 7-5.

In Game 2, Mansfield scored the game's first run on a two-out RBI single by Chris Miller. The Mountaineers added three more runs in the third on a RBI?single by Cody Stinger and two-run double by Miller.

Williamsport graduate Nick Grove went 3-for-4 for Mansfield in a Game 1 loss.

The Lock Haven wrestling team fell to Bloomsburg, 29-9, in an EWL dual. The Bald Eagles won just three of the 10 bouts. Billy Ashnault defeated Warrior Run graduate Jason Guffey at 133 pounds, 6-4.

The Bald Eagles picked up back-to-back wins at 184 and 197 pounds as Tom Kocher and Ben Hepburn each earned decisions.
