It was absolutely exaggerated! All tourism agencies, fishing enterprises and related businesses are reporting all is normal to better than before in the Gulf area. We were sold a bad bill of goods! That was no 'devastation' to the area, it was the minor bump in the road. "Devastation that will take generations to clean up"? BULL EXCREMENT!!

Oh, and I'll pass on to Jon your total respect for his point of view and how, even though you don't know him, how you and other libs would never demean or otherwise belittle the character of another person you don't agree with. Liberals.......

I'll bet you did hours of research on this ThomThom. I'll admit I am close friends with J/Z, but we did remember these FACTS, but I'm sure the Daily Kos has a different spin on it. Oh, and thanks for bringing up the hate for Bush/Cheney. I forgot they are both private citizens now and don't matter anymore. Liberals.......

"Rape of a British oil company", indeed!

BP must stand for bilge pile in the mind of the paranoic who wrote this screed. This is probably the most unmitigated catalogue of paranoid delusion, lies and half truths, I have ever seen assembled on this site. It does, of course, stand in support of the one fundamental message of the fringe right absolutely essential to continuing to deflect blame from the calumny inflicted on our nation by those truly at fault, repeated endlessly in all varieties and guises, "it is Obama's fault".

If this Weigle person wants to inveigh against those who stood by and did nothing in the face of catastrophe in the Gulf, an ill conceived series of wars based solely on fabrications, the collapse of the economy, I would remind him of the iconic photo of George W.Bush gazing disdainfully from the luxurious serenity of Air Force One at all the wet people down below. "Helluva Job Bushie"

"Considering that oil drilling needs to be federally permitted, please explain how it could be that the president is simultaneously against domestic oil production, yet it's at an all time high?" ---CHayes

++++

Here you are offering opinions again instead of facts. Better go check your sources.

The federal government does not issue drilling permits on private property in North Dakota. The President/federal government (why don't you show respect by capitalizing the P?) does not have authority to issue or reject drilling permits. That is why oil production is up in North Dakota.

Also US domestic production is not at an all-time high, contrary to what you say. Production peak was close to 9.5 MM Bbl/day in early 70's. It is about 5 MM Bbl/day nowadays.

"What does it matter if Bakken oil is being drilled on private land? The drillers STILL need permits from the Feds to drill."

Yes, but there are far fewer regulations so that it is more difficult to deny the permits. The feds cannot deny a permit on private land just because the want to, but on government land (notice I did not say public land because very little government land is public anymore) they can use any excuse they want including, we just don't want to. Under this administration it is nearly impossible to get a permit to drill on government owned land, even for companies who are paying a lease to do just that.

can't you guys read?! Oil production is up because of drilling on private land in the Dakotas, not because of anything Obama has done. He loves the environmentalists and hates fossil fuels. What part don't you understand. Remember skyrocketing electric bills and "if you try to build a coal fired generator I will bankrupt you"? And my tax dollars didn't clean up the Gulf, BP and good old Mother Nature disposed of the oil in the water. You can't beat up Mother Earth, she will win every time, even with nukes. You libs are pathetic!!!!

It's kind of funny that hardly any one addressed the body of the letter, just what I feel was the satirical ending. Did Obama turn down help from other countries? Did he turn down the idea of bringing other assets in? When the Gov. of Louisiana wanted to put berms of sand off the shoreline, didn't Obama's EPA take it's time and finally turn down the request? Of course, when we worship the messiah, his decisions are always correct. Hayes I'll need accurate research on this- and no biases.

Permits to drill are down, but production is up because of improvements in peoduction techniques like fracing and artificial lift systems for oil production.

I think Mattel should hurray up and come out with the new conspiracy theory Barbie, complete with accessories, like a tin foil beret, and fake birth certificate.

"The President is currently involved with a hatchet job on the firearm industry just like the hatchet job he did on the oil industry. He sits and waits for his opportunity and then pounces with all of his force to finally get his way."

Again, domestic oil production is at an all time high. Considering that oil drilling needs to be federally permitted, please explain how it could be that the president is simultaneously against domestic oil production, yet it's at an all time high?

The President is currently involved with a hatchet job on the firearm industry just like the hatchet job he did on the oil industry. He sits and waits for his opportunity and then pounces with all of his force to finally get his way. We're giving him all the ammunition he needs. This is the way that this administration has operated from day one. One crisis opportunity at a time. Healthcare, energy exploration, openly gay people in the military, gay marriage, federal spending out of control, budget crisis after budget crisis .....the list of things crisis go on and on ......all manufactured to force the issue to get what the president wants!

Sorry Gavin, but if this is how the Republican party wants to rebuild itself, I'm all for it. By 2016, at the present rate, we should be hearing that Hillary Clinton is a secret space alien, sent by the plant Zork to destroy the Earth.

Stock up on popcorn, it should be quite a show.

""President Obama isn't a US citizen and cannot be President"

"The conspirator in me asks,"was it really an accident?""

Meanwhile, tinfoil hat sales continue to be steady, unaffected by the economic slowdown."

You forgot that secret muslim, President Obama "ordered the attack" on the diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Gavin. That's a good one. Or maybe that he wants to "confiscate all guns in America" so he can march Republicans off to extermination camps. Or even the new classic, that President Obama ordered the Newtown school massacre.

My God, I just can't believe someone wrote this letter. I bet if there was oil spilled in your yard you would be screaming bloody murder and want revenge and compensation. Your tax dollars paid to clean up the gulf, now let us get our money back from the people who caused this. Watching p**n on there computers, where do you come up with this stuff anyway.

eriklatranyi - "President Obama's inspectors, who are tasked with ensuring blow-outs do not happen, were at their desks watching **** on their computers....at taxpayer expense.

Nobody was fired." Funny thing is, the same thing happened at the SEC during the Wall Street collapse. Maybe we should just ban computers!

If the truth were to be known, the moratorium on drilling in the Gulf has caused far more damage than the blow out ever did! Because the moratorium killed the energy based economy of at least a portion of four states with shutting down drilling in the Gulf, I brought my family to central PA. I could have stayed in Louisiana and drawn unemployment like the President would have liked, but we came here because the Northeast was desperate for anyone with any oilfield experience.
